Jen Kramer, Harvard, and Bootstrap 4

Jen Kramer describes herself as a "Web Design Teacher" but that barely scratches the surface of what she does. She's a speaker, a teacher, a writer, a video trainer, and much more besides. Jen currently teaches web design at Harvard Extension School.

In this episode, I talk with Jen about teaching web design at Harvard and her upcoming videos for OSTraining. Jen is creating a video series and book on Bootstrap 4.

Open a Joomla Form by Clicking on a Menu Link

Some websites make it really hard to contact them. The "Contact Us" page is hidden in the footer. The social media icons, if there any, lead to accounts where no-one ever replies.

Why not make it as easy as possible to contact you?!?

One good idea is to place a "Contact Us" in your menu. As soon as people click on it, they'll get a pop-up box with a contact form. Your visitors don't even need to visit a different page. That's as easy as it gets.

new recaptcha joomla

Back in 2014, Google reinvented it's ReCaptcha spam prevention system.

Previous versions of Captcha tried to prevent spam by presenting users with distorted letters and numbers. This system was more painful for users than it was for spammers.

The new Google system is known as No Captcha ReCaptcha. This new system is way more user friendly and only requires the user to click in a checkbox.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to enable this spam prevention solution in your Joomla site. If you want to take a step back and learn how to create forms, read this guide on how to create Joomla contact forms.

module

There are two features in Joomla that allow you to easily place modules directly inside articles:

  • loadposition allows you to publish all the modules in a particular position.
  • loadmodule allows you to publish just one particular module.

One of our students was using these features to create a layout but wasn't happy with how it looked inside his article. He wanted more control.

This tutorial will show you how to place modules inside your article with more style.

WooCommerce Explained is the best-selling book on WooCommerce.

In this exclusive tutorial, taken from WooCommerce Explained, we're going to show you how to create variations for your WooCommerce products.

Variations allow users to choose different options for a product. This means you can sell a T-Shirt in different sizes and colors.

However, variations can be complex to set up. Before you read this blog, I highly recommend you read "How to create WooCommerce attributes". Creating attributes is an essential first step before creating variations. The instructions in that post also follow on from that tutorial.

In this exclusive tutorial, taken from WooCommerce Explained, we're going to show you how to create attributes for your WooCommerce products.

The OSTraining Podcast #22: Andrew Embler and Concrete5

Andrew is the founder and CTO of Concrete5, an open source CMS that's comparable to WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and others.

Concrete5 has been around for over a decade and has introduced some innovations that other projects still haven't managed to equal. For example, for a long time now, Concrete5 users have been able to click on any part of the site to edit items, right there on the page.

I talk with Andrew about what it's like to run a large project for many years. He describes the ups-and-downs, including a major release that broke backwards compatability and frustrated some community members. Andrew also talks how he found a second wind, 10 years into building his project!

What is the Contact Creator Plugin in Joomla?

We've already written a tutorial on how to create Joomla contact forms using the core Joomla Contacts component.

There is also a plugin built into the core, which automates the creation of the contact form and adds new users to the contact list as soon as you create them.

This little plugin, called Contact Creator, will cut the work of adding contacts almost in half, or if used correctly, could automate it completely.

We recommend Shack Forms for any advanced Joomla contact forms, but there's a lot you can do with the Joomla core.

Adobe Are the New Owners of Magento

Adobe has just purchased Magento for $1.68 billion.

This deal is not a big surprise. People were predicting it a couple years ago, when Magento started partnering with Adobe. Karen Baker, a figurehead in the Magneto Community, wrote that the community had been expecting something like this.

This also isn't the first time Magento has been sold. Back in 2011, Magento was sold to eBay. That deal is generally considered to be a failure, and eBay sold Magento in 2015. Hopefully, Adobe will turn out to be better owners of Magento than eBay.

Let's look at this deal from several angles ...
