Zoom, highlight in document, interactive animation

3 years 2 months ago #124133 by hboinnard
Hello OS training team!

I have an educational design question that may be something you know and research very much about it:
How to zoom and highlight in a document, making it an interactive animation?

I know that it's used in your video classes, and I find it great and efficient. Now for shorter content, or split in different parts, it would be more attractive to have this interactive animation. A bit like putting all the step by step screenshots in a sequence that the user can navigate into.

(no no, it is not for a Joomla related content that may compete with OSTraining, too much challenging ;-)
The documents are archived records and photos, and the goal is to teach the general public about them, so that they know what important parts of the document they should look at or focus to. And also not being scared by them.

What I found, while browsing the web, are different approaches:
- video based (swf files like prezi.com/pddktvfv1man/navigating-the-flipped-classroom/ )
- jQuery based or similar, slide show with transitions and animations (I don't know how they are built)
- pure Javascript code, maybe hard coded, usually for landing page (not re-used on other items)

I supposed I can make a presentation within the same document, as it will cover the main features requested. And then embed the result in a popup/lightbox, so that the user can interact with buttons like "next or previous slide". That is actually my plan B.

But my plan A is a autonomous file format and self hosted, open source if possible. The successful solution will be used for more content to come, and for other documentation and training purposes. So it is more a long term investment.

Do you know tools that can go beyond this?
Is there some extension for Joomla that provide similar features?

Note: it can be a paid solution, it's not a problem, but I can't have any branding, links or ads with the animation. It is will be on a public funded website.

Hi hboinnard,

If you're using Joomla for this project, you can create a slides presentation through Google Drive that can be easily embedded into your site with OSEmbed .

Certainly there are no fancy effects in Slides presentations like the one from your Prezi example, however it can be a good alternative.

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

Thank you for your reply. This is my plan B (presentation/slides), to embed into the site.

But for training and demonstration purposes, how beautiful and efficient would be a more fluid and fancy interactive animation, wouldn't it ?!?!

The team at OSTraining may have looked at some solutions, or are still searching for some. Any idea where to look at?

Kind regards,
Hervé

Hi Hervé!

Unfortunately, we don't know of a Joomla one. But, here are several alternatives to Prezi that aren't Flash based:
1) emaze.com
2) www.visme.co/
3) www.swipe.to/
4) sway.com/
5) www.powtoon.com/slides/
6) slides.com/ (has some animations)

By the way, there's also D3 which is excellent for developers:
d3js.org/

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick
