TOPIC: 500 error after template instalation

500 error after template instalation 5 years 8 months ago #36546

Hi,

It may be really easy one but I just can figure out what`s wrong. I`m doing a clean installation of Joomla 1.7.3 All went well except when I`m trying to install any Template I`m getting 500 error:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Could you pls guide my how to fix it or what can cause that.
Thank you :)
Enjoy you day :)

Hi Anna,

Try fixing your folder and file permissions using the following tutorial:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/admin-too...nd-file-permissions/

Hopefully that will fix it for you.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Thank you for that tip. I tried to fix permissions with admin tools but even then while installing at extension manager I got 500 error. Some other plugins and extensions I tried also return 500. Went back to cPanel to check permissions - all folders have 755 and files 644.
I was wondering if that can be hosting account fault? Cause I just purchased new one, on old ones never had such problems.

Best regards,

Anna

Have you tried clearing cache first then checking?

What hosting service do you now use?

In your admin area go to Site (top menu) >> system information (sub menu) >> Directory Permissions (tab) >> are any unwritable? If so, here's how to manually change the permissions using cPanel (sounds like you already know how though, but just in case):

Hi,

Thank you so much. Unfortunately nothing works. I did check permissions in system info - all writable. And I also clean cache but still getting error. I decided to make everything on my local host then move it with Akeeba to any of my host where it will work :)

BTW, when the Joomla 1.7 template desing module will be available?
I`m need to transfer my html site to Joomla template:)

Best regards Anna

Hi Annalan,

Did you successfully move your site with Akeeba?

And I'm pretty sure that OSTraining is currently working on several 1.7 tutorials for templates and modules.

Hi Tessa,

It will take me some time to develop complete project cause I want to build everything (add articles and components) then move it. I done this many times before with other projects and Akeeba backup is really helpful and quite easy :)
Actually this is the project I need to build template from scratch, cause I did build first html site and now need to make it Joomla. Bit of a challenge :)

Meanwhile I had send message to this new host to check if the problem is on their site.

Greetings Anna

Hi Anna,

What's the "path to temp folder" setting set to in your global configuration's server tab?

As to the template design class, check out:
www.ostraining.com/joomla-template-course/

All the notes have been converted for Joomla 1.7 (except for the last section).

Kind regards,
Nick

Occasionally, not often anymore, this is a transient server error and has nothing to do with your templates, it may go away by using a different browser of from another computer or just waiting a while.

This error is almost always connected to server permissions.

Unless your template is not installed correctly changing templates shouldn't give you this error. I'm assuming you can see it if you use one of the default templates? It's only when you change that you get it?

Let us know what happens.

500 error after template instalation 5 years 8 months ago #36837

Hi guys,

I did contact hosting company and they manage to solve it. So I suppose it was something wrong with servers permissions not Joomla :)
Ed, I did get this error with custom template so I was bit afraid it is something wrong with it, especially that I trying to do it myself ;), then uploaded it to different host and it worked just fine. Same happened with plugins.
But it is fine now.

Thank you so much

Greetings

Anna

Glad it's working. In that case, I would say this is totally a server issue, and nothing to do with your Joomla.

Good luck. Let us hear from you again anytime you need us.

Cheers,
Ed
