Preserving SEO while upgrading

Preserving SEO while upgrading was created by argent
Hi,
I'm upgrading a client's site to WP responsive and want to maintain the new traffic the site has finally started to generate over the last few years.
Can you please advise what is required regarding 301 redirects and robots.txt etc.

Any help appreciated.

Hi argent

I wouldn't worry much about the responsive design. If anything, that will help your site's rankings.

However, have you made any changes to the permalinks or metadata on the site?

HI Steve,
The existing and original site is not a CMS, just a vintage hand coded job.
I'm rebuilding in Wordpress, everything will be new.

Hi argent!
  • May we know how looks the links of your hand coded website?
For WordPress, you may consider a plugin to match the links you have in your current website to try in the WordPress version: wordpress.org/plugins/custom-permalinks/

Let me know if this has meaning for you

Kind regards,
Valentín

Thanks Valentin,
But it seems that this plugin would suit a Wordpress to Wordpress upgrade. Not for a non template site to Wordpress - would this be fair to say?

Hi argent

I've found this plugin to be very useful when moving sites to WordPress:
www.ostraining.com/blog/wordpress/permalink-finder/

Even if you don't get every new URL perfectly matched to the old URL, it will recognize errors and try to guess the best match. It's been a big help for us.

Another option is to add 301 redirects in your .htaccess file - 301s pass existing link juice/history to the new url
Redirect 301 oldurl newurl

That's a great idea, freshwebservices

Perhaps a combination of the two?

Manually create 301 for all of your important URLs and let Permalink Finder catch any of the less important URLs.
