Search the DB for items in a list and add items via FrontEnd

11 years 6 months ago #9 by
Hey...

I have a list of Educational Resources of interest to a lot of people.

Can I have a page on my Joomla site, where people can enter in a keyword, and get returned to them a list of all related Educational Resources in my list?

Can I also allow the users to add items to list via a form?

I'd also like the returned items to be 'clickable' to an area where they can learn more about the resource.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kim Keith <!-- s:mrgreen: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mrgreen.gif" alt=":mrgreen:" title="Mr. Green" /><!-- s:mrgreen: -->

Hi Kim

When you say "a list of Educational Resources", do you mean a list of links?

If so there are several good directories that can work in a weblinks format:

1) Mosets Tree ($99) has a weblinks option and can create a category of links
2) Sobi2 is free and you can unpublish a lot of extra fields to just leave a link and a description

People can then use the Sobi2 or Mosets Tree search box to find what they're after.

Finally, Joomla's basic weblinks component can show categories of links with descriptions

so from your reply, i get that i can use the tools you mentioned to create a list of links/descriptions, and make it searchable.

but how can i enable a random visitor to the website (who will not be an editor, just someone looking at the page), to be able to add things to the list?

and, if the above is not possible, can an article editor (front-end access only), log in and add links to the list?

thanks

Hi Kim

If you'd like people to be able to add links, they all have that option.

Mosets and Sobi both place a link saying something like "add your listing here" at the top of their pages.

With Joomla's basic weblinks you can make a menu link to allow people to subscribe ... Menus > Main Menu > New > Weblinks > Web Link Submission Layout
