My Test site was fine, now getting 404. What now?

11 years 5 months ago #33 by rlprodesign
Hello,
My test site was working fine yesterday. Now when i try to connect, I am getting 404 error.
What can I do to figure out what's wrong and fix it. ie. what are some of the debugging steps that can be used to figure out whats wrong?

Thanks,
Norm

Hi Norm

Couple of questions:

1) Test site on your desktop on a hosting account?
2) Are Search Engine Friendly URLs set to Yes in Site > Global Configuration?

Hey Steve,
1. This is directly on my PC. I am connecting to localhost. I have not yet moved the site to the hosting company.

2. No, I am not using SEF URLs.

Thanks.

Ok - and this was the flash drive we gave you?

Can you see if this file works for you?

<!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href=" www.joomlatraining.com/jsas.exe ">jsas.exe</a><!-- l -->

Download and follow the installation instructions. It basically another version of what we gave you.

actually, it's not what you gave me. its a site i had before attending class.

what can i do to figure out whats wrong? what file can i look at? how can i determine if its the database? if its the joomla setup? etc?
is there a step-by-step methodology for debugging and ruling out stuff?

No, but I can write one for you. Just tell me these three things:

1) Your version of Joomla
2) Any extensions you have installed
3) Any error messages beyond 404
