500 Layout default not found.

500 Layout default not found. was created by jockal
Hi I keep getting this error when logging into the Joomla backend. It gives me the option to access the control panel and everything seems to be OK. However, when I go to some not all articles they either show me a 500 error or do not display at all. All seems to be working on the Frontend.
If you need more info please let me know.

Hi Alistair,

OK, for that part, simply ask your hosting support to fix the folder and file permissions for you. After that's done, you can go to the next step in the tutorial.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick
Hosts asked for a login which is fine. They have said they could see a list of extensions when accessing Extensions > Manage. Doesn't work for me. They also suggested I upgrade to Joomla 3.5. Is this good advice?

Hi Alistair,

I recommend to make a full site backup if possible (for security reasons).
Then try the update to 3.5

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi
Downloaded, installed and then ran Akeeba backup and it returned a "This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying."

The hosting company carry out snapshot backups of the site and database daily. Is this enough? I am content to update to 3.5 but I'd be surprised if this fixes the problem.

Hi Alistair,

My guess is that www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-reset-joomla/ should resolve the issue for you. Was your host able to fix the folder and file permissions? If so, you'll need to go through the rest of the steps of the tutorial.

Let us know if you've carried out all the steps and we'll be glad to help.

If you have a daily backup and don't mind losing new data (e.g. user interactions on the site) since that backup, restoring the backup would be a good option.

Looking forward to helping more.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi

They haven't fixed them as yet. So I'm thinking update to 3.5 then ask them to fix the permissions. Does the attached give you a clue. The page does give me the opportunity to change those listed to recommended permissions. Happy to change these myself. Good course of action?

OK, it should have only been a few minute fix for them.

I wouldn't advise updating to 3.5 yet. 3.4.8 works well, but your install appears to be corrupted. The tutorial I recommended should fix it for you.

Yes, please give that permissions area a try. Let us know how it goes.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi
I've set the permissions to the recommended settings. Still get a 500 error with Akeeba backup and Admin Tools and when I attempt to edit an article I get a basic edit function (attached)

although JCE is selected in Global Config.

Not sure where to go now??!!

Hi
Tried to install the 3.4.8 stable update package and it logs me out. would you be able to look at the backend to see if anything obvious appears. Also when I goto Extensions and manage the only option I get is to install ie. no list of extensions.

We received your email.
Admin Tools and Akeeba backup are broken - both displays a white screen.

It is important to do a backup and fix file permissions before performing any update.
 • Download Akeeba backup from here
 • Re-install from Extensions > manage
 • Go to Components > Akeeba backup

Hopefully it will allow you to create a fullsite backup this time.

You can go with the update, however double check with your hosting provider about the most recent backup before any move.

Hi jockal,

Great! We're glad your hosting has regular backups.

As to your attached error, looks like that's for the backup. The Akeeba backup erred. However, you mentioned:

So I attempted the update

Was it the backup you attempted or the the update? At this point, since your host has backups, we'd recommend moving forward with the update.

If the backup automatically runs on an update, go to:
1) Extensions
2) Plugins
3) Disable the "System - Backup on update" plugin.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi
Problems still exist with this. The latest are:
Seem to be able to access some articles but cannot use JCE editor, TinyMCE seems to work.
So at the moment I cannot update to Joomla 3.5 and cannot access Akeeba Backup, Admin Tools and cannot use JCE Editor.
Also, I changed the file permissions to their recommended setting and this morning the permissions for configuration.php have altered to 444
and
public_html/administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup/akeeba.backend.id1.log
thru to *id9.log to 666
and
public_html/administrator/components/c...sefileman/config/bookmarks_file_789.php
help!

Hi Al,

Could you clarify what you did exactly? Did you reset the files to 3.4.8 as explained in www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-reset-joomla/ ?

Looking forward to helping.

Nick

Hi it seems I might be in a better place. My hosts have updated the site to 3.5 and I can access Admin Tools, Akeeba Backup and JCE Editor. I have carried out the fixes in your previous posts. The one problem that exists is that Akeeba is reporting PHP memory_limit too low.
My hosts suggested "You can increase the PHP maximum execution time yourself by setting this value in the php.ini file in the public_html folder, if this doesn't exist you can simply create a new file and this will start working." So I did this containing the following text:
register_globals = Off
upload_max_filesize = 100M
post_max_size = 100M
memory_limit = 100M
upload_tmp_dir = 100M
max_execution_time = 180
I have no idea whether this is right or not but Akeeba will not work. It would be great if this is fixed. Can you log in and fix this and/or advise. Thanks for your help so far.

Hi
Also I'm getting this update message:
Weblinks Extension Package
Site Package 3.4.1 3.5.0 N/A Update raw.githubusercontent.com/joomla-extensi.../master/manifest.xml
github.com/joomla-extensions/weblinks/releases/tag/3.5.0

Is this OK to update or should I uninstall?

Hi Al,

Your hosting advice is correct. When you tried the php.ini suggestion, what result did you got?

Is this OK to update or should I uninstall?

If you need weblinks, go for it.

Hi
Followed my hosts advice re php.ini. I placed these in my php.ini file:
register_globals = Off
upload_max_filesize = 100M
post_max_size = 100M
memory_limit = 100M
upload_tmp_dir = 100M
max_execution_time = 180
They were not my hosts suggestion and I still get the Akeeba memory low message.

To confirm, be sure the file doesn't include
- that is not part of the syntax.

In addition, we have a tutorial that will guide you in this matter, check the section Increase the PHP upload limit: www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/installation-problems/

Looking forward to help you
