Readmore buttons not displaying articles

5 years 7 months ago - 1 year 11 months ago #123195 by gilles
Hi guys,

Very odd, I have a menu item (Category Blog) with articles on this site.
(removed)

The ReadMore buttons of my articles simply refresh the homepage. Oddly, I can see the article if I go to the article via this URL:
(removed)

I've cleared the cache, fixed the db, still no go.

Any ideas as to what could be going on?

Cheers!

Hi Gilles,

This is due those articles are not linked to any menu item, so, when you click on the readmore button load the full article in the same page, which I assume is hidding the component area. This can be confirmed by testing with protostar template where the article loads fine: carriagehillsoa.ca/127-changing-your-profile?template=protostar

Solution: create a menu item for category blog pointing to the category that owns those articles. That process will generate a new URL where hopefully those articles will be visible (unless the template has a setting to keep them hidden).

Kind regards,
Valentín

Thanks Valentin,
But as stated, I already have such a menu item ("News")...
Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

If you check the links for your articles, they have an id but they don't have the alias that uses the menu item.

For example:

URL without menu item:
http://carriagehillsoa.ca/127-changing-your-profile
URL with menu item:
http://carriagehillsoa.ca/menu-item-alias/127-changing-your-profile

Where "menu-item-alias" is the alias of the menu item.

Hopes this clarification helps

Kind regards,
Valentín

Thanks Valentin,
But Sorry... I'm confused....

Yes, I understand this. What I don't understand is you stated:
"This is due those articles are not linked to any menu item,"
But from what I understand (my previous response) they are.

By seeing the URLs we can know if the articles are or not linked to a menu item. I wrote about this concern in the JED blog .

Hopefully will clarify my previous comments

In addition to the menu item concern, your template seem to hide the component area in home page, at least.

Kind regards,
Valentín

I re-read your start reply, and this is interesting. You have two links for the same article:
carriagehillsoa.ca/carriage-hills-vacati...hanging-your-profile
carriagehillsoa.ca/127-changing-your-profile

The "News" section that list the shorter link is a custom HTML module?

Yes, I discovered that I can get to the article this way. It was just provided as extra info to help resolve the mystery.

Yes, the component is hidden for the home page on the template as I don't want to display any articles on it. This shouldn't affect read-mores though.

Not sure what you mean by "The "News" section that list the shorter link is a custom HTML module?"
The News module on the right side of the homepage is a ZenTools 2 module. I spoke with support at JoomlaBamboo and they stated it's not a template/module issue.

The readmore links from here are coming from the category blog menu item type, right?

Correct.
In fact neither Read-Mores work... from the article excerpts from the main menu (Articles » Category Blog) or from the home page's Zentools module which displays excerpts of the News Category articles.

To ensure the Zentools module wasn't interfering... I temporarily disabled it, removing it from the home page. Alas, the News Menu item's Read-mores continued to display the home page... no articles.

OK... I just completed all the steps above with no changes. I also cleared the cache on the server (cpanel) and the J! cache.

Everything looks fine in the menu item.
  • Disable one by one the third party plugins
  • Clear Joomla cache (and any enabled through the hosting)
  • Refresh the News page

See if the links are fixed.

For example, this:
http://carriagehillsoa.ca/127-changing-your-profile
should become:
http://carriagehillsoa.ca/carriage-hills-vacation-news/127-changing-your-profile
