quick question about Fabrik

quick question about Fabrik was created by emilylu
Hi,

It was unclear to me if I can use Fabrik on my Joomla 3 site to build a searchable phone directory, few things I want to make sure Fabrik can do and I can't see it from the OStraining video.

1. I understand we can create db connections and display a form or table on the front-end Joomla site. But can it connect to any database other than MySQL? I have a MS Access db with all the data I need to perform a search within that db. Do you think I can connect to that Access db?

2. I see you can do a search and some filtering, but can I allow the front-end user to perform a multi field search with multiple filed filters?
For example, I want to allow filter by col A, B and C, then keyword search in col D and display the end result.
Can I create that in Fabrik?

Thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily,

You can create a directory and include a search feature.

1. Do you mean Microsoft Access? If that's the case, I'm afraid is not possible.

2. Fabrik allows you a lot of flexibility to build custom applications and manage the data depending to your needs. What you ask is possible. Note the more requirements, the more complex the Fabrik app to build.

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

1. so it is possible to connect to an existing MySQL db? I can have the data dump into a MySQL db if Fabrik can get data from it, then I will have to figure out some auto process so it will dump the new data into that new mysql db.

2. this is what I want to create as example: www.umn.edu/lookup?SET_INSTITUTION=UMNTC
Is that possible? Thanks!

1. Yes, you can. Here is the official docs about it: fabrikar.com/forums/index.php?wiki/connections/
UPDATE: note, Fabrik will manage all the apps within your Joomla database by default. So, an external database is not mandatory.

2. Yes. See an example: www.ostraining.com/courses/session/joomla/fabrik/videos/search/

I recommend you our Fabrik class to learn how this extensions works: www.ostraining.com/courses/class/joomla/fabrik?task=view

If you have any question, we will be here to assist you

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

I see you guys offer guidance on SobiPro as well... and that's a mutl directory so I'm wondering if I can use that tool to build my searchable directory? Again by viewing the video I'm not sure if it will take any existing database?

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Emily,

I'm pretty sure SobiPro doesn't have the ability to connect to an external database, but please double check with their developers to be certain.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the fast response. I'll double check with them.
If you can think of any similar searchable application that can connect to an external db (MySql or Access), please let me know, thanks!

Hi Emily,

Fabrik is your best choice, talking about connecting to an external database. However Sobipro could be easier to setup - with the lack of connection to an external source of data.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of another alternative that may support external databases.

Kind regards,
Valentín
