Changing a page alias in Joomla 3.x

5 years 10 months ago #121010 by patvb
I recently redesigned my client's website from Joomla 1.5 to 3.x, and they are very happy, but they needs a page URL to change from what is automatically assigned by Joomla (SEF urls), to something that appears in advertising already out all over the state. What can I use to do this?

Here is their message:

> The new sctta website looks great, but we are having an issue with people trying to download the passport. The links on all of the cache pages and in all the advertising and articles, etc. points to:
> but the new home for the passport’s address is now:
> Could you ask your web person to point a redirect from the old address to the new one, so people don’t get the 404 not found message when they try to download the passport.

Thanks,
Pat

Hi Pat,

There are two options:

1) Create a hidden menu ( www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-li...r-using-hidden-menu/ ) and create a menu item in it for the geocaching page. Set its alias to "geocaching"

2) Redirect www.sctta.net/geocaching to www.sctta.net/index.php/geotours/jack-trail-geotour using www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/redirecting/

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi, Nick.

I tried the second method, installed and set a redirect as shown in the tutorial, but when I went to test it, it failed... still got the 404 page. I don't understand what I did wrong or failed to do correctly. I've been over it 3 times now. Could you take a look at it to see what I've missed?

Thanks,
Pat

Would you send us some login credentials to support@ostraining.com so we can take a quick look for you? Also, please do three things for us:
1) In the email, include a link to this forum post
2) In the email, include step by step direction of how to replicate the issue.
3) After sending the email, reply to this forum post letting us know you sent the email so that we can check it.

Looking forward to helping.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi, Nick.

I've sent the email with login details and explanation of what I did. I really appreciate you looking at this. It's something that should be easy to follow, but I did something that isn't right...

Thanks,
Pat

Thanks Pat! It's fixed now on your site :)

Instead of the full URL for the "From URL", I used the relative URL "geocaching" and that worked.

Kind regards,
Nick

Thank you, Nick! This was a great solution, and works great... just need to remember to use relative URL.
