Upgrade 1.5 to 3 or to just build 3 from scratch?

5 years 9 months ago #120820 by sdk4100
Hi,

Seeking advice. I have an old 1.5 site (you have been helping this past week trouble shoot it). Its time for me to upgrade and get modern. The question is whether I should try and upgrade from 1.5 to 3 or just build a new site in 3. The site is very small (tricountycameraclub.com) and i am concerned that it might be complicated for a novice (which is me). What do you think is the best way to go?

thanks

Seth

Hi Seth,

Upgrading is not hard, however if you have third party extensions installed, that may add a bit of extra work.
We have a class that would help you get started .

Looking forward to help you

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi,

I look a look at your video on migration. I"m thinking it might still be easier to start from scratch. My photo Gallery component and calendar component are both obsolete (no longer supported) so I would need new anyway.

The only thing I think I need to figure out is how to copy my existing Articles. Is there a way to copy an article from Joomla to a text file or something outside of joomla? This way I can re-use the ones I need without having to literally re-type every word.

Thanks

Seth

Keep your site running live while you rebuild it. Install a new version of joomla in a sub directory of your site along with a new database. That way you can have the old and new site open at the same time and simply copy and paste articles across. When you have completed the task which should not take long move your new site to replace your old one.
Nearly all hosting accounts allow you enough storage space and the ability to create more than one database. If your account only allows you 1 database then I would consider upgrading the account or moving hosts. The alternative is to rebuild the site using local host on your pc.
In this video it shows you how to install in a sub directory www.ostraining.com/courses/session/jooml...introduction/manual/
