Site is Blank

Site is Blank was created by sdk4100
Hi,

My site is hurting. When you go to the site nothing shows up. Just a blank page. Same with the admin page. I asked my Web Host if they had any clue but they didn't and because it was Joomla they didn't know how to guide me.

I"m not sure if this was a result of a hack as I noticed a high traffic volume in October (~4,000) when we usually only get a few hundred.

this is a 1.5 site. Once i get this fixed it's time to upgrade but first things first. If I can't fix it I will need to take it down.

Site Url: [removed by Nick]

Thanks for your help

Hi SDK,

Go to System > Global configuration > Server > Error reporting: maximum
Save changes

Then refresh your homepage and see which errors come up. Post in your next reply.

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

Unfortunately I can't access the admin panel either. That too is blank. Unless your referring to something in the Cpanel ...but i don't think you are.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Hi SDK,

Valentin was referring to the admin area, but since you don't have access to that, it won't be of help.

Would you send us some cPanel login credentials to support@ostraining.com so we can take a quick look for you? Also, please do two things for us:
1) In the email, include a link to this forum post
and
2) After sending the email, reply to this forum post letting us know you sent the email so that we can check it.

Looking forward to helping.

Kind regards,
Nick

Thanks Seth! It's fixed now :)

I noticed that you were running Joomla 1.5.22, so I reset the files to 1.5.22. You can now update to the latest version 1.5 version (1.5.26) and apply the following two patches as well:
forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?t=811970
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/hotfixes/

Kind regards,
Nick

p.s. I'm going to remove the URL to your site for security purposes.

p.s.s. Also, ask your host to turn off strict error reporting on your server. Here's a reference:

Thanks for your Help Nick.

I'm working to get the error reporting turned off.

of the two fixes you suggested, I couldn't figure out where to get the files for the first fix. For the second one (from last weeks update) I noticed another security update message that said it was actually a PHP problem that had already been resolved. Do I still need to replace the session file?

thanks again.

Update...

Hi Nick,

So i have the site live again and have updated to 1.5.26. thanks!

I did notice one problem. When I click on the menu item to bring me to a meeting schedule I get a 500 error message (see attached image). I remember seeing this once before but I can't remember how to fix the problem.

Any advice?

Also, what is the best way to save akeeba back up files to my local hard drive?

thanks

Seth

Hi Seth,

Great! Glad you got things sorted! Nice work!

1) Yes, it's based on PHP version, so double check your PHP version. Here are the details for it:
www.joomla.org/announcements/release-new...43-joomla-3-4-7.html

2) A 500 error is an internal server error, which usually means that there's a misconfiguration of the server with the software that's being run or something similar. Since it's at the server level, the error gets logged in the server error log with a detailed message. This detailed error message is usually key to figuring out what the specific issue is, which in turn is key to resolving it.

That being said, could you contact your host to ask them to check the server error log for you, as to why you're getting the 500 error?

3) You can simply download the backup file from Akeeba by going to:
- Components
- Akeeba Backup
- Manage Backups
- then look for the link in the download column

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick

p.s. your image upload didn't come through. Could you try reattaching it? After attaching it, be sure to use the insert button.

Hi Again,

So here is where I stand based on our last communication:

#1). my PHP is version 5.5.30 so I think that is ok. The link said I needed 5.5.29 so I assume there was a subsequent change.

#2) My host simply copied the error messages and forwarded them to me. He said that I could access the logs in the main directory. Though when I went there I saw no errors. Did he reference the same Log you were referring to? Here is the message my host forwarded:

The error log is in your main www directory. (error_log)

It was 1.6 GB in size which in itself can cause some problems
being so large. We have deleted this file.

When an error occurs the error log will be recreated automatically

These were the last errors recorded from today.

#3) When I went to download a copy of my backup, I noticed the last column says "Manage and download". That header is grayed out and and won't allow me to click on it. is there something else I should be doing?

i'm not sure if my last screen shot of the error message (for item #2) went through so here i have attached again (I hope)

Thanks Again,

Seth

Hi Seth,

1. You're fine here.

2. Interesting. I only see Strict Standards messages, which shouldn't generate blank pages.

Look for the last working backup. By default are stored in the folder administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup/ - look for a .jpa or .zip file

To restore the backup, give a try to this tutorial from "Step 4: Upload the Archive to the Server" to 7.

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing. I am replying to an ongoing string surrounding my site. I no longer have Blank Pages. Nick fixed that. The 500 error message is only showing up when i click a link in the main menu ("Meeting schedule"). My previous dialogue was with Nick so it may be confusing if your just jumping into the middle :).

I provided the error log after Nick asked that I get that from my host as a means to identify what is causing the 500 error.

If you were suggesting to upload an old version of the site to fix the 500 error I want to make sure that is the right thing to do. I have received the 500 error since Nick got the site to work again. I would have to go to an older back up and I'm not sure if I would just be loading a version of the site that wasn't working correctly in the first place.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help

Thanks for the clarification, Seth!

Forget about my previous suggestion, please. Before doing anything, it's important to do a fullsite backup for security reasons. Since Akeeba backup is not working, backup your complete site (including your database) through your hosting provider. It may require to contact them to ask for a workaround.

Is this site still Joomla 1.5.x?

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

Actually Akeeba seems to work fine. I figured out how to download so that seems ok. I am working on 1.5.26.

I wonder if I were to try and reconnect the menu connection to the component from scratch if that would work. ?

May you elaborate. Sorry, I don't see the connection with the error 500.

What are the steps you follow to reach the error 500?

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

When I click on "Meeting Schedule" in the Main Menu (left side) it brings me to that error. It doesn't happen with any other menu link.

Thanks

This is a 500 error different to what I thought. It's coming from Joomla and basically tell us the event extension is broken - since Joomla 1.5 is a very old version and no more updates are available.

1. Which was the last change you made before getting this issue?
2. Do you have the installer of the last version available for Joomla 1.5 for the event extension?

Kind regards,
Valentín
