Joomla link duplication issue

6 years 3 weeks ago #118900 by emilylu
Joomla link duplication issue was created by emilylu
Hi,

I believe I have asked a similar question before but I can't seem to find that post so I have to post as a new topic again. The issue is Joomla system is generating multiple links that lead to the same Joomla article (page). I have total of 1070 Joomla "articles" but the site report shows about 2500 page links, so more than half of the 2500 are just duplicated links that lead to the same page.

I have went through all the menus and elimiate any duplicated menu by change them using "menu ailas" type, but I can still see duplicated links been generated.... Can you offer some ideas as to what other places could cause this duplicated link issue?

Also, is there a tool you recommend I can use to do a site crawler I can use to generate a complete site link report?

Thanks for your help on this issue!

Hi Emily,

May we have an example of duplicated links for the same article? I'm curious how they look

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

See the 4 links below as an example for our "Transportation FAQ" page, notice all 4 links all points to the same exact page and I'm not sure how to get rid of the 3 duplicated ones. There are some pages have even more duplicated links (6-10 links).

#1. www.district279.org/services-dept/transp...1-transportation-faq

#2. www.district279.org/student-families/res...1-transportation-faq

#3. www.district279.org/trans/99-services-de...1-transportation-faq

#4. www.district279.org/myosseobus/99-servic...1-transportation-faq

Hi Emily,

A canonical extension may help for this case: www.ostraining.com/support-forum/joomla-...al-tag-18907/#117698

Looking forward to help you

Hi Valentin,

Thank you for sharing the canonical extension and seems like it will resolve our issues, however, this site is not on Joomla 3 yet, therefore I can’t apply that solution 

I’m trying to resolve the multiple links manually in all the menus. However, I couldn’t figure out where some of the links came from such as category blog list. For example I can’t figure out how Joomla generated this page: www.district279.org/trans/99-services-de...ments/transportation

I went through all the menus and can’t find anything related to category blog list that could lead to the page above. Is this something caused by a bug in the system? Or something I’ve could done in result of the category blog view?

Please advise, thanks!!

The extension is advertised to work in Joomla 3, however I tested in a local Joomla 2.5 site and worked like a charm.

If you want to give a try (in a test copy of the site, if possible):

1) Create and download a backup:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/test-site-akeeba-backup/

2) Download and Install the plugin: styleware.eu/store/item/26-styleware-content-canonical-plugin

3) Enable through Extensions > Plugins manager

Test the example urls from your previous reply. Look in source code (Ctrl + F in Firefox) for the link tag for canonical, similar to:
<link href="http://yoursite.any/the-unique-url-goes-here" rel="canonical" />

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

Thank you again for the additional info.
Yes, I will test it on the copy site because that'll save me so much time!

However, I still don't want to see that category blog list page on my site. The way I get to that page is by clicking on the "url path" from the breadcrumb on top.

So if I'm on this page:
www.district279.org/trans/99-services-de...1-transportation-faq

Then I click on "Transportation" from the breadcrumb, then I got this:
www.district279.org/trans/99-services-de...ments/transportation

But I should get the "homepage of the Transportation" article instead, which is this:
www.district279.org/services-dept/transportation

So why Joomla system link to that category list page view? Which I see that all over the site. Is that something can be fixed by the canonical extension?

Thanks.

Sorry - I responded too fast and I just went back and edit a question and please let me know if you have an idea. Thanks!

So if I'm on this page:

The breadcrumb issue is a bug, unfortunately it can't be fixed due there are no more updates for Joomla 2.5.

About the canonical solution, please read the details on this documentation: support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en

Hi Valentin,

I've successfully upgrade that Joomla site to 3.4.5 and applied the canonical plugin to my Joomla 3 site.
However, following your instruction I couldn't find any canonical tags in the source code - I know I have the plugin enabled.

Can you please help me take a look and see what I have missed? Here is an example url:
www.district279.org/services-dept/transp...1-transportation-faq

Thank you!

Hi Emily,

Please be sure to clear the site's cache afterward, as the contents can be cached for some time before you see an update.

Let us know if that doesn't fix it.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,
How long do I have to wait? I've clear the site cache more than 1 hour ago and still didn't see any canonical tag in source code. Is there any tool I can use to crawl/index our entire Joomla site so I can see how the canonical tags apply for each page? I also can't find any documentation on that plugins, not on the other post mention by Valentin either.

Thanks!
Emily

That's strange. Would you send us some login credentials to support@ostraining.com so we can take a quick look for you? Also, please do two things for us:
1) In the email, include a link to this forum post
and
2) After sending the email, reply to this forum post letting us know you sent the email so that we can check it.

Looking forward to helping.

Hi Emily,

I updated the Canonical plugin order to be the loaded as last.
Then cleared cache, however the plugin is not responding as it should.
  • Let's see if another plugin may conflict with the canonical one.
  • Go to Extensions > Plugins
  • One at the time, disable a single third party plugin installed
  • Clear cache
  • Visit this sample page and check source code (Ctrl + U)
  • Search (Ctrl + F) with "canonical" word

Repeat this process for every third party plugin installed

Kind regards,
Valentín

Valentin -
I went through the possible plugins on my list, I didn't want to disable all of the plugins because I know by doing so could shutdown my site, i.e. authentication plugins... Is there any other way to find out where the conflicts? Could it be under "components"? By the way, I was trying to delete some components by uninstall the package files from the "Manage" tab, however even though the components are gone but I still see it show up on the "menu list". For example, "Xmap" was uninstalled but it still show up under the Components menu. How can i remove it from there?

Thanks!

Hi Emily,

This is very odd. I double tested the canonical plugin in local. It works fine.

Let's see if there is an error in somewhere by activating error reporting:
  • Be sure Canonical plugin is enabled
  • Go to System > Global configuration > Server > Error reporting: maximum
  • Clear browser and Joomla cache though System > Clear cache

Refresh one of the pages of your site and see if there is an error. If any, copy the error text and post in your next reply.
  • Then, go to System > Global configuration > Server > Error reporting: default

Kind regards,
Valentín

Valentin,

This is very odd indeed!
I follow your steps to turn on the error max but there is no errors at all. I also clear cache and expired cache, randomly check few pages in the Google Chrome "incognito" window (this should be the same as clear browser cache) and still no "canonical tags" shows up in the source code on any pages....

I'm not sure what else to do? Is there a different plugin I can try? How can I manually set the canonical tags in few pages just so I can test it??

Please advise, thank you!

Hi Emily,

There are two free plugins that promises to add canonical support:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extensi...adata/aimy-canonical
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extensi...-a-metadata/tag-meta

Worth to take a look

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hi Valentin,

I've followed your recommendation to install the "tag meta" plugin on my demo site:
schools.district279.org/esc/index.php/typography/demo-menu

Here are the steps:
Install the tag meta extension for Joomla 3, enabled the plugin, make sure it load last and clear cache.
View page source and search for "canonical", still no where to be found.
Are you sure I don't need to actually create any canonical tags for it to work?
Would you like me to give you the access to the back-in so you can see what else I'm missing?

Thank you.

Hi Emily,
  • Go to Components > Tag meta
  • New
  • Set the url /index.php/typography/demo-menu
  • In Meta options tab set the canonical url

Hi Valentin,
I did what you suggested on that same page and still no canonical showing up on the source code page :(
view-source:http://schools.district279.org/esc/index.php/typography/demo-menu

I've included a screenshot hope you can give me a clue? Do I have to set the urls for each canonical tag on every page?? That will be very time consuming for over 1000 pages!

Please help!

You followed the correct steps. Yeah, you would need to do individually for each article.

At this tage, I suggest to consider hiring a developer in order to make the original Canonical plugin to work, since that extension automates the process for all the articless. I tested a few times in different sites and got a successful result always.

The developer in charge would check why is not working in your site.

Kind regards,
Valentín

Valentin - if you know how the canonical plugin works can you give me some clues as to if there is any Linux server related settings I have to change? I don't think there is much to do at the site level so this will be the next logical place I can think of? Thanks!

There are no special requirements. As long Joomla runs fine, the plugin should do the same. A deeper look would give us a clue about the issues with canonical links.

Valentín
