Panels or Display Suite

3 years 8 months ago #125361 by rain.jones@yahoo.co.uk
Panels or Display Suite was created by rain.jones@yahoo.co.uk
Hello again,

I have created a theme for my new site, I want to achieve 2 things, and have been trying panels and DS to achieve them and not succeeding with either of them.

I want to create a panel underneath my slideshow, to display featured content, I have enquired about this previously, the problem I am having is that when I create a panel or display suite layout, the text falls off the section allocated to the main content, I also want to create all my teasers to have the image sat at the side of the body, the display works fine set as normal, but when I try to apply panel or DS it knocks the text and image out, my main content area is set to 650 px wide, I have been taking a look at the page template and layout pages, and can see where the setting is for my content set at 650 px, but I cannot seem to see a way to set the panel or DS to also be set to 650 px wide, is there a way around this, as I'm quite new to Drupal I don't want to be messing about with the code for the module, plus I cant see where I would go to do this. It is quite key to the design locked in my head.

Hi Lorraine,

May you share an screenshot of how the layout setup looks in DS or Panel. Whatever the one you're using.
In that way, I can see clearly what do you want to achieve.

Looking forward to help you

Kind regards,
Valentín

Hello again Valentin,

I hope you are well?

I have taken a screenshot of how the teaser looks, and a couple of screenshots of the set-up, showing the layout, I have tried a few different layouts and they all have the same effect, I had the exact same problem when I created a mini panel layout, it falls outside of the main content area and runs into the sidebar.

I have tried it with both 2 column and 3 column layouts, fluid, bricks, stacks they all do the exact same thing.

Many thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lorraine

Hi

Yesterday Daniel, was very kindly taking a look at my site, and trying to help me out, he suggested trying bootstrap as a base theme, and working from there, I have added it to my themes, and want to be able to take a copy of it, and put it in my themes, but I can't see it in the themes folder, any ideas why this might be please?

Hi Lorraine,

Did you check out the official documentation for sub theming ? www.drupal.org/node/225125

You will need to have the theme installed and then a copy of theme installed and enabled.

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your help yesterday, sorry I didn't reply, sometimes family life takes over doesn't it, I have a 5 year old.

Didn't want you to think I was being rude.

When I was thinking about how I did the first theme, we took stark and duplicated it into sites/all/themes, and renamed, and then replaced the changed the stark.info and screenshot.png and deleted the rest, then added the various files and added the relevant css and php files, since which time, I have added navigation and changed the colour and then added an ad region in the header, moved the logo, is Bootstrap flexible enough to let me do the same, and try and re-create the design I have already started?

Regards

Funnily enough the Bootstrap file is now in my theme section, must have been too impatient, I will go and read the document you sent, but I will be having a meeting with my manager today, and I think I will have to have this site up and running and live by Friday.

Many thanks

Not to worry Lorraine things happen :)

I'd renamed the various parts but I wouldn't outright delete anything. You can set the logo so on in drupal through the config page. It's important to understand that in the theme you only really need to change the css almost everything else should be done in drupal. You can disable what you want via drupal so don't worry about that too much.

You are basically going to want to populate the main content and the sidebar second or sidebar right depending on how the theme has named it.

I know it sounds really complex now but once you get it you will be in a much better position.

Hi Daniel,

Just had my meeting with the boss, and I have got to get it live, and move onto another site, so will try to configure this one to how I want it to be, one quick question if I may, I have installed it, and it has still got my slider as a view, in the main section, I want my slider to be like the one on the demo, do I get rid of mine and do I just configure it again, in the same way I did mine, and if so what should I use, or do I keep mine and add the code that I did on my tutorial?

Thank you

Views slideshow, creating as a view, then selecting slideshow in settings, which I am quite comfortable with doing, as have done it a number of times before I managed to get it to work properly.

Assign what you did to a block region and see how it looks in bootstrap.

I have done that and the slider seems to be left aligned, and the title and body are underneath it, which obviously I will need to add the code back in, talking of which, I wasn't sure where to add it at first, where should I put it? I just added it to the top of the Html element css doc?

Thanks, by the way you are very helpful.

Right now that it has been subthemed you have 2 options :

hunt down the original code that is making it display the way it is.
or set an override since you are in a rush to get things moving I would go with override.

Open sites/all/themes/euromedia/css/style.css go to the very bottom of the document and write the new style rule for the content you want to update. CSS works in a set order so by adding it last it will override the current display configuration.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you, I will take a look at it.

It's just killed my site I was working on, argh, and now I have a blank screen, luckily, I know from experience, it is always worth having a test site to do stuff on, and always to have a back up.

Because I have so many sites to do, I have created another installation on the server and will take this opportunity to start from scratch and try to achieve what I want to do, I have my original site to fall back on.

I've seen on the site a tutorial for the Drupal Feature Module, I can use this module to copy all the modules etc can't I?

Wish me luck

Oh dear yeah I just checked the link error 500 who has control of the domain setup ?

You could copy the modules but I am concerned that you will inherit errors from the modules being moved. While drupal is really good for security at times it can be paranoid and moan because you do things in a certain way. If it was me I would install the new modules via drush you can do it all in a single line of text

Thanks
Daniel

It's ok, I have access to the server, and all the domain accounts, the other sub domains are still working ok, so not too worried, I've created a new installation, and added the bootstrap theme, and created the featured for the modules etc. from a different subdomain, if it doesnt work, I can always delete and start again can't I.

I haven't done the drush class yet, and haven't got a clue how to use it, by the time I've figured that one out, I could have installed the modules manually anyway.

Thanks again, sorry to take up so much of your time, typically I didn't want to be in this position, I wanted to learn it properly first, then do websites, but unfortunately the powers that be, don't work like that, and want it all done last week, because I could get a wordpress website up and running in a couple of days, obvioulsy with a theme, which I'm trying to get away from, because they keep saying I want to put that there, and this here, and obviously they think Drupal is the same, and can't understand why it is taking me so long.

Yes I understand I know you are in a hard place management only care about results. You might want to consider spending one of your nights working through the videos. Typically you should be able to set up an entire site in 2 days but you have to understand everything first. Rushing is usually counter productive.

You are completely right, my only problem is with the videos, is that I have to work with the video and practice, and write everything down, I've spent entire weekends, watching the videos, and it just didn't go in, like you say once you understand how to do everything I will be able to do the sites very quickly, but I've gotta learn first, and to me the more times, I have to create and build a site the more I learn but to them it's why is it not done, it's very frustrating, but that is the way it is I suppose.

I feel quite the expert at creating views, and using them in blocks, and have created a number of functions our current site doesn't have which will save the guys putting the content online a huge amount of time, it's just the slideshow and the panel, I'l get there I know I will.

I have to say though, I would not have got this far without you guys helping, because all the tutorials I have found before coming to you, have not taught me anything.

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

Well I have installed a new drupal and added the modules (manually), set up my articles to go into a slideshow created the slideshow as a view, the slider and is left aligned, and displaying at the top [field_slide_link], not even show why as I have deleted the field, and checked and it is not selected within the view, the logo is centre aligned and on my own theme, I'd moved the logo onto the navigation area, left aligned, although I didn't want it to remain there, I wanted it left aligned in the header section, with the banner ad right aligned, but that wouldn't work.

The sidebar isn't viewing as a sidebar at all, although there is one and two in the regions, and the content area, is going the whole width across the site, as it stands, I prefer mine.

Plus I don't know where anything is in the code to amend it, where as on the one I have, there is a layout.css, fonts.css, htlm-elements.css, reset.css, html.tpl.php and page.tpl.php, the only reason for changing is because the little panel on the slideshow had moved, I'm very tempted just to take it off, and scrap this one, and use my theme?

I am totally out of time, I have to have this site done and dusted and get onto another one, tomorrow at the latest?

Hi

I'm just backing up the server, just in case it crashes, again.

I've now created a new installation for the site I need to get live this week, which is at electricalmagazine.euromediamail.co.uk/drupal, leaving the other installation I created yesterday for the other site I have to get live next week, which is glamping.euromediamail.co.uk, then I can concentrate on the site to go live, it has the slideshow and all the features I need on there, and I will try the Bootstrap theme on the other.

Thanks
