Help with Drush SSH keys

Help with Drush SSH keys was created by SamStamport
I have been struggling for days to get drush to run on my local Win 7 computer. I've read lots of stuff & watched some videos, but have not found the answer. What are the following messages telling me? Is this a problem with drush, with aliases, ssh? I'm a newbie so please respond with that in mind.

When I type php -v at the Win 7 command prompt I get.

PHP 5.3.6 (cli) (built: Mar 17 2011 10:48:37)

Copyright (c) 1997-2011 The PHP Group

Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2011 Zend Technologies

I assume that means php is running?

Hi SamStamport,

Try this for verifying your php

make a .php page with this in it :

<?php
// Show all information, defaults to INFO_ALL
phpinfo();
?>

then navigate to it in your browser it should give you a long list of every php setting if the page will not load then php is not working properly.

Thanks,
Daniel

OK. I'm a newbie. You're going to have to give me more details. I know how to create an HTML file using Notepad. After I save it with an html file extension I simply click on it and the browser opens. This does not happen when a create a file with the php file extension.

Hi Sam,

No problem! We'd be glad to help.

An HTML file can be opened in a browser without a server, since it's just a static file. But a PHP file requires a server. I'm guessing you've already installed Drupal and got a working instance, correct?

If so, please add the file to wherever you have Drupal installed, then navigate to wherever you have your Drupal site (e.g. localhost/drupal). Then add the PHP file name behind it, e.g. localhost/drupal/myinfo.php

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

Kind regards,
Nick

PHP version is 5.5.30.

Yes. I am using Dev Desktop.

Is there a chat facility we could use to resolve this problem? I'm going to have to be away from my computer soon and would like to resolve this problem quickly, if possible.

P.S. Thanks for being patient and helpful.

I think I'll hold off on pro plan for now.

In the meantime please see www.reddit.com/r/drupal/comments/49lmqv/...bug_drushssh_errors/ for additional information on this problem.

I have to be away from my computer for a while, but will check here when I get back for the next step in solving this problem.

Little did I know a year ago when I decided to teach myself Drupal that I'd also have to learn php, drush, ssh, etc.!

Great, thanks Sam!

We'll dig into it further and post a reply.

By the way, it's not necessary to use Drush. It's only for convenience. If you want to skip it for now and continue with the other training, you're certainly welcome to. Then once you get more experience, you can attempt Drush. It's totally up to you.

Nick

Looking through the log, it does indeed appear to be the keys. Please give the following short class a try to confirm:

It's an excellent class that gives you the working knowledge behind SSH keys.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions and we'll be glad to answer.

I'm in the process of watching the videos.

In the first one (Introduction) it is unclear why Putty is better than the Windows command prompt. When I start Putty it automatically connects to my remote server. If Putty is better than the command prompt how do I make it start on my Win 7 computer instead of connecting to my remote server?

Assuming that I can use Putty instead of the command prompt for local commands what is the advantage?

Thanks!

Hi Sam,

PuTTY is indeed for working on your remote system and not locally.
The truth is most development work is done with linux.
While the windows command line does look just like the Putty interface it is not anywhere as powerful.
If you want the same to work locally you will need to use something like. Git for windows .

However if you are asking for my personal recommendation I would setup a virtualbox using the same system your live site is you have 100% compatibility to work with it remotely.

If you like I could do a tutorial on setting up a virtualbox if you provide the details that your live server is running with for you.

Thanks,
Daniel

Thanks so much!

Let's hold off on the virtualbox for now. That sounds like yet another rabbit hole! I would like to read a summary or blog post about it so that I can learn more.

I'm currently at the point in the video of trying the ssh-copy-id command to push my newly-created public key to my server. I'm getting command not recognized. I found this link www.snip2code.com/Snippet/83195/ssh-copy-id-for-Windows as a possible solution, but there are no instructions on that link as to how to use it.

As an alternative could I open the public key in Notepad then paste it into the .ssh authorized_keys file on my server?

P.S. Thanks for your patient hand-holding. I have a couple of degrees in Computer Science, but creating an awesome web site using Drupal is nothing like I've ever done before. I go way back to COBOL and punched cards having received my B.S. in 1973. I have programmed more recently in C++ and C# so php is not totally foreign to me.

Hi Sam,

So just to clarify when you did the basics and entered ssh-keygen you got a screen like this

right so double checking it needs to be ssh-copy-id followed by user@domain_ip

so for example:

ssh-copy-id daniel@192.168.0.1

Daniel

Hi Sam,

Yes that looks like you have multiple sets of keys you need to make sure that the key you are upload matchs the one you have saved locally or it will not accept the key. Might I suggest that you work through syncing your devel site to github and then sync your github to your live site that way you can run a version control system and if something breaks you can roll the site back to a previous state.

Thanks

I searched for all places on my hard drive where there were SSH keys and deleted them. I then ran the ssh-keygen command again and manually edited the authorized_keys file on my server cleaning up old keys and adding the new one. I still get the permission denied message when I type drush @prod status.

I looked at using github a few months ago and dropped the idea. I will look at it again, but first I want to get this problem solved. Is there more information I can gather about my server and my local site that might help?

OK. I finished watching all the videos and scored 100% on the quiz. I am now certain that my SSH keys are working because I can login to my server with "ssh columck5@columbiablooms.org" and I am connected without error messages. Unfortunately, I'm still getting "Permission denied <publickey, password>" when I type "drush @prod status" after I exit the SSH connection. It seems to me that my problem is not with SSH, but with the alias I set up. Please see attached alias file. "drush status" and "drush @dev status" work just fine. Do you have a video or tutorial for drush aliases?

Hi Sam,

Congratulations on the 100% :)

Ha yes with drush you have to assign your aliases or use sudo. This is another bug of the dev setup I don't know what is powering it to tell you straight out what the sudo command is for it. Try this:

Setting up your local computer to use an alias needs a little configuration. Alias configuration files can go into a .drush folder in your home directory or in the sites/all/drush directory of the site itself (putting them in the .drush in your home directory means they will be accessible from anywhere). You can add as many alias files as you like here with the naming convention:

sitename.aliases.drushrc.php
Each file can contain any number of aliases descriptions which are just entries in a multi dimensional array, the key of which is the subitem for that alias. For example, an alias file called mysite.aliases.drushrc.php with one dev entry like this ...

$aliases = array(
'parent' => '@parent',
'site' => 'mysite',
'env' => 'dev',
'root' => '/var/www/html/mysite.dev/docroot',
'remote-host' => 'example.myserver.com',
'remote-user' => 'mysite',
);
... gives one alias which is accessed via the @mysite.dev drush argument. For example,

drush @mysite.dev status

PS if you continue to have issues I will set it up myself and do a tutorial on it for you :)

Thanks,
Daniel

I tried to attach the alias file I created to my last post, but I don't think it worked. Here it is. It is named aliases.drushrc.php and is in C:\Program Files (x86)\DevDesktop\drush\vendor\drush\drush.

When I type "drush status" or "drush @dev status" in my Windows command prompt it works just fine, but when I type "drush @prod status" I get the "Permission denied <publickey,password>" error message. This implies to me that something's wrong with my array parameters for @prod.

I've done all kinds of web searches trying to find out what to place in the parameters, but have found nothing.

Sorry the alias specifications didn't show up in my previous post.

I am trying to set up Drush so that I can migrate from dev to prod.

My "prod" is on bluehost.com (shared). Here are the specs.

Main Domain columbiablooms.org
Username columck5
Home Directory /home1/columck5
Shared IP 50.87.249.78
cPanel 11.52.2
Apache 2.2.31
PHP 5.4.24
MySQL 5.5.42
Perl 5.10.1

I am trying to get Drush to work on my Win 7 computer. I already posted the alias file I'm using. Here are the other specs.

Acquia Dev Desktop V2 build 11/22/15
php 5.5.30
Apache/2.4.16 (Win32) OpenSSL/1.0.2d mod_fcgid/2.3.9
Database client version: libmysql - mysqlnd 5.0.11-dev - 20120503 - $Id: 15d5c781cfcad91193dceae1d2cdd127674ddb3e $
Database server

Server: 127.0.0.1 via TCP/IP
Server type: MySQL
Server version: 5.5.45-log - MySQL Community Server (GPL)
Protocol version: 10
User: root@localhost
Server charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

I am using Drupal 7 (latest version) on Win 7. I am also using Drupal 7 on "prod", but I'm trying to update it to the latest version.

Please advise if you need additional information.

Thanks!

Hi Sam,

I have set up the ADD package, I didn't enjoy the process that is for sure lol.
Can I ask how you are activating drush with your ADD setup?
And are you actually using aquia for your hosting or planing to in the future ?

Thanks,
Daniel

Wow! That was fast. I'm sure the process of re-creating my problem was no fun.

I type "drush @prod status" on the Windows command line prompt. I've tried clicking the Drush console on the ADD control panel, but I get the same error message. Both "drush status" and "drush @dev status" work just fine. This leads me to believe that there's something wrong with my alias for prod.

A few hours ago I discovered the Windows Powershell. I will investigate it in the coming days.

My volunteer group is operating on a shoestring right now. I found the cheapest option--bluehost. Acquia is more expensive than bluehost-shared.

Did you get the Permission denied error message on your setup.

Hi Sam,

Yeah I am pretty sure the issue here is that you have to use the packaged ADD drush and it is a little boxed shall we say they have configured it for Aquia and it is designed to not let you break your site. As a result it is very picky about the way you use it.

Perhaps we can just work around this though. Have you set up a version control system for your site like bitbucket or github ? You could sync to one of those and then to your server.

Thanks,
Daniel

Hmmm.

I set up github a few months ago, but have not been using it. I've also not yet learned about Features. Until I utilize Features my understanding is that git ignores the database thus solving only part of the migration problem.

I think I'd really like to begin learning the Drush way of doing things. See www.reddit.com/r/drupal/comments/4aiinx/...e_with_command_line/ . How can I unhook my dev from Acquia?

Hi Sam,

I'll make a tutorial on setting up an independent dev environment.

What os is your server running ? I might as well make it match as much as possible.

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Sam, Have you contacted support and requested SSH access from them yet? If not you can do that and they will enable it.

The OS they run is CentOS 6.5.

I will try and get something put together for you as quick as I can.

Thanks,
Daniel

Are you referring to Acquia? My host is bluehost. I have SSH access.

If you are referring to bluehost. I'm surprised that you found CentOS as their OS. If that is true the information they display when I login is incorrect.

Looking forward to a tutorial for an alternative to ADD for Windows and how to migrate my dev from ADD to the new local server.

Hi Sam,

You might want to familiarize yourself with the Centos documentation it should be freely available on the site. If you are going to stick with this then it would be useful to know the commands for performing administration tasks and maintenance.

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Sam,

Am curious do you have to manage anything on your live site or is it all set by the admin team?

Thanks,
Daniel
