DrupalCon Dublin Keynote

This week is DrupalCon Dublin. And as always, Dries gave the keynote address on the first morning of the event.

This year's keynote was broken into two sections: "Drupal 8 Update" and "The Why".

In "Drupal 8 Update", Dries talks about the technical side of Drupal. From minute 27 to minute 42, Dries talks about what's new in Drupal 8.2, which arrives on October 5th. We've covered those new features in previous posts. Then, from minute 42 to 48, Dries discusses features may arrive in future Drupal versions. If you're short on time, watch those 6 minutes. Scroll down in this post, and we'll cover those 6 minutes in detail.

In "The Why", starting at minute 40, there's a much broader focus on the larger purpose of Drupal. This section of personal anecdotes and stories of Drupal in action.

During the four weeks since that post, the Drupal team has added more major features. Drupal 8.2 is now in the release candidate stage, so the features are finalized. Now is a good time to download and test.

You can read the 8.2 changelog for a rundown of all the changes, but in this blog post we'll introduce you to three more big improvements.

Would You Be Interested in an Online Drupal 8 Day?

Drupal 8 has been out for nearly one year, and is now maturing into a really powerful platform.

We will hold an online event all about Drupal 8 on November 19th, the first anniversary of Drupal 8's release. This will be the perfect day to celebrate D8.

The event will be called "Drupal 8 Day" and will be an online version of a Drupal Camp.

It will be one complete day of live presentations. To get a good feel for this type of event, check out Wordsesh.org in the WordPress space.

The goal is to present Drupal 8 in the best possible light, especially to people who normally can't attend a Drupal Camp. We talk with a lot of people who just don't live near any kind of DrupalCamp. Some typical examples are people outside the big Canadian cities, people living in Eastern Europe but outside capital cities, and people in sub-Saharan Africa.

There Will Never Be a Drupal 9

Yes, that's a big statement in the title, so let me explain.

Lots of OSTraining customers are looking into Drupal 8 and they have questions about Drupal 8's future. If they invest in the platform today, how long will that investment last?

This is just my personal opinion, but I think an investment in Drupal 8 will last a long, long time.

Drupal 8 took five years. It was a mammoth undertaking, and no-one in the Drupal community has the energy for a similar re-write. Drupal 9, if it ever does arrive, will be a far smaller update.

With Drupal 8 setups you are encouraged to use Composer, DrupalConsole and Drush because this is a faster and more effective way of adding components to your site. However, if you use those solutions, you can't access the readme file directly to read information about the module.

We will show you how to use the README module to access readme files directly from the Drupal 8 admin area.

Drupal & Bitnami Multiple Environments

An OSTraining member asked how to setup a Bitnami environment that supports PHP 5.4.

The Bitnami Wamp stacks are available in 3 versions here:

  • 5.5.37
  • 5.6.23
  • 7.0.8

Each of these provides an environment that is preconfigured with a different version of PHP.

5.5.37 comes with PHP 5.5, which you should also use for 5.4 setups. The reason 5.4 is no longer available is because the changes between 5.5 and 5.4 are minimal. You can read more about the changes on the official change log here.

1/2 Million Views of the Drupal 8 Beginner Class

Drupal 8 is now eight months old.

Has it been a success so far? Yes. Drupal 8 is running over 100,000 sites and is now more popular than Drupal 6.

As a training company, we try hard to support Drupal 8. We've set ourselves a goal to help as many people as possible to use Drupal 8. In 2015, we launched a Kickstarter project which provided enough financing to release over 200 free videos on YouTube. The training is the best available for Drupal 8, and it’s completely free.

The first videos were released were in The Drupal 8 Beginner Class

Today, I'm delighted to say we reached a major milestone. The Drupal 8 Beginner Class has been viewed over half a million times. That's a lot of people learning Drupal 8!

Use Drupal Console and Composer For Faster Development

One of our OSTraining members asked us about the best way to install Composer to manage dependencies.

While Composer can be used to add module dependencies in Drupal, it's more practical to also use DrupalConsole to handle the process. Console automatically passes the requests to Composer.

From the terminal command line running the following commands will install both Console and Composer together.
