Hi,

On the Post category pages I would like to display just a small feature image & an excerpt of the posts in the category. However, at the moment it's showing whole text/article of each post.

I've been through the options in WP settings & also my themes options, and changed a few things, but I can't get them to display just the excerpts. Any ideas on how to do that?

Are you writing excerpts separately or trying to get them automatically generated? Here's what the codex says about excerpts.

That looks like the exact info I need. I'm not quite sure how I can check which one my template is using though?

What do you mean by template? Do you mean theme? I'm using the Abundance theme that is based on the Woocommerce plugin.

Is that what you meant?

Hi Rachel,

A theme is a a collection of templates and styles. Although, we somtimes use the term template when we mean theme. It's a bad habit I've acqired from jumping between different platforms that use the term differently.

Within the theme there will be a template for the page. The page template will have the code that sets up the teaser. Usually the automatic excerpt is not created unless you insert a "more" tag in the post. Without the more tag, it will show the entire content.

Your theme/template may be written not to use the automatic excerpts. It's hard to tell without looking at the code. See if the codex page helps you track it down. If you're using the more tag and it's still not working, then it's in the template.

Hi Ed

Thanks for those links. I had a look at the articles & also found a plugin listed on them, 'auto excerpt everywhere'. I couldn't install it initially because my WP firewall plugin was blocking it & I was getting a fatal error message. I disactivated the Firewall & installed the plugin. It works just fine now but I hope I haven't made a mistake messing with the judgement of my firewall?? ;-)

The plugin seems perfect though & is exactly what I needed.

If the plugin is legit from wordpress.org, you shouldn't have any problems.
