TOPIC: Self Hosted banner

Self Hosted banner 11 months 2 weeks ago #47788

Hi,

I would like to set up a self-hosted banner. My theme has many banner widgets & I can add an affiliate code easily to them. However, I'm a little confused how to set one up that is self hosted on my site.

My theme has added this explanation;

Self Hosted Banner Image: Enter the following code replacing the link URL and image URL with your own
<a href="OUTBOUND LINK URL" title="OUTBOUND LINK TITLE"><img src="FULL PATH TO IMAGE" width="300" height="250" alt="YOUR ALT TEXT" /></a>

but I'm a little confused as to where I should upload & the banner image to & how I can then link it to a product or page. I'm sure this is extremely easy & I'm just tired, but I can't find any info on Google and not quite sure where to start.

Thanks

Hi Rachel,

It depends on where you would like to put the banner at on your page.

Here are some resources to read:

Hi Tessa,

Thanks for your reply. I'd like to add the banner to a widget in the sidebar. My theme has many of these banner ad widgets already set up & they're very easy with my affiliate links, Just copy & paste. The problem is uploaded & setting up my own site's banners. Creating a code. Where to upload them & how to link them to the page, product or category.

Thanks

Hi Rachel,

I understand what you are trying to do now.

Does this help? wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-insert-a-banner-1

Seems like this person is trying to accomplish the same thing.

Hi Tessa,

Thank you for your reply to this. Sorry for my late response, I had to put banner ads on the back burner for a few days to deal with something else. However, I had a look at the information in the link you provided, but I don't think it is the same thing I'm trying to do.

The banner ads won't be for my affiliates or any outside link. They will be my own banner ads for products or services within my site. When I use affiliate links or banners they provide me with a code to copy & paste, not just a link. It is this code that I'm not sure how to create. My theme seems to require a code, not just a link, in order to create a banner ad.

I will also continue researching it myself. The problem is I'm ot quite sure what these are codes are called so I can search for tutorials on Google.

Thanks

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

If you are putting a banner ad on your site that refers back to something on your site, all you are doing is inserting an image with a link. You don't need any special code to do that.

The affiliate programs give you special code because they supply the graphics and track your clicks so you get credit, so they need to have codes that interact with their information.

If you are trying to create an affiliate program, and want to make yourself your own affiliate, then you should be looking at plugins that for affiliate programs. They will generate a code for you to use. Otherwise, a banner is just a linked image.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

You have a good point, and that does make sense with a couple of my issues. I may be wrong but it seems that with one of my themes I need a code to add an image to the banner ad widget. I can't see any options to upload an image or insert a link. It just refers to a code. That said, I think that is more likely to be a question for my theme's support, and I am still awaiting their response. I'll look into it some more.

Thanks

From your description it does sound like it's specific to the actual widget or theme. Let us know if you hear from them and what they say.

Cheers,
Ed
