I am developing a new version of our current site. I created a folder called WordPress and my new site files are there. This folder is located here: www.stjathenaeum.org/WordPress. Can I move the files that are in the Wordpress folder to the root (www) and continue to develop the site? Will the current site files still be displayed when someone goes to www.stjathenaeum.org or would they see the new site pages?

My thinking is that if I can work on developing the site and have the files in their final location, then when I'm ready to launch the new site all I would have to do is delete the current site files. I don't have much content on the new site so I thought that it might be easier to troubleshoot problems after moving now rather than wait until the entire site is finished. I will have a very short time to fix problems after I move the files.

Hi bda

Sorry for being slow to reply to this over the weekend.

Yes, you can move the files although this isn't as straightforward with WordPress as it is with other systems. Could you give this tutorial a try? www.ostraining.com/blog/wordpress/move-new-folder/

There's going to be 3 things you'll need to fix after moving the files.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Here is a link to another set of instructions in your blog for moving a site - www.ostraining.com/blog/wordpress/how-to-move-a-wordpress-site/. These directions are completely different and seem simpler. Any thoughts on this?

Also, what about my second question:
Can I move the files that are in the Wordpress folder to the root (www) of my site now and continue to develop the site with the files in their permanant location? Will the current site files still be displayed when someone goes to www.stjathenaeum.org or would they see the new site pages in WordPress?

I have some content in the new site - and need to minimize disasters when the site is finished. Is there a best practice for developing sites and moving them. Now would be the time for me make changes in the way that I'm developing the new site.

Hi Bda,

I'd go with the second tutorial. The one you linked to was written back in 2012.

Unfortunately you can't move the files to the root at the moment, because your current site is already there.

What you're doing is good - developing in a subfolder. However, you might want to set the site to offline to hide it from prying eyes until you're ready to launch. This plugin will help: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/site-is-offline-plugin/

Is this the correct URL for the moving instructions?

In your previous email you mentioned that there are three things I'll have to fix after moving the site. What are they? You don't list them.

Will try the offline plugin.

Hi bda,

yes - that's the correct tutorial - www.ostraining.com/blog/wordpress/move-new-folder/

The 3 things Steve mentioned are highlighted in the article: site urls, permalinks and images.
