TOPIC: adding ecommerce plugin to my theme on local server

adding ecommerce plugin to my theme on local server 1 year 3 months ago #38470

Hi, I've just downloaded a new Premium WP theme onto my Wamp local server. I want to work on my site locally for now while I'm creating my content. Can I add a ecommerce plugin at this point and start working on that now too, locally. I would like to start uploading product photos and descriptions etc.

Is that ok? Is it advisable?

Hi and welcome Rachel

Yes, absolutely you can do that. You can go ahead and install the plugin and load up products on your local server.

However, our advice is that it's best to start building a real site online if you're a beginner. If you're just practicing or if you're technically savvy, then a localhost is fine. But moving a site from a locahost to a live server can be tricky.

Thank you. That's very helpful! I thought it may be a difficult way of doing it but as It will take me quite some time to add all the content (it's going to be a pretty large site with lots of different types of content) I would prefer to do it offline in the beginning.

However, I don't want to have a lot of problems changing servers after. Is there anyway I can do this offline other than with Wamp, or without my general content showing yet to the public?

Hi Rachel

Yes, if you host your site on a live server, you can do use this plugin: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/maintenance-mode/
Adds a splash page to your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance. Logged in administrators get full access to the blog including the front-end

On a localhost, WAMP is definitely your best option.
