I have a potential client in the nonprofit sector. This is a plus for me and the client as I have experience in fundraising and in accepting grant proposals for a foundation. But I digress... here is the client's last response:

"check out www.dollars4schools.org/
That's what I would like!"
dollars4schools is not template based.
I know I need to ask more questions but as far as multiple earmarked donations on a site I found this
labs.hahncreativegroup.com/wordpress-plu...-post-donations-pro/
and wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-post-donations/

My idea is to use a Wordpress non profit theme and incorporate segments of ideas from the dollars4scool site that my client likes in the wordpress version such as the wordpress donation plugin.
I just realized their analytics will trace back to this page!

I don't think the color scheme is applicable to the nonprofit in question.
I don't think the buttons are either.

1.-But a version of the button (attached image) with a different icon and colors would. My first question then is can I redesign the button an use it?
2.- see the image with divs - can I use that replacing the check mark?
3.- what can I use from their site?

Thank you.

Hi Ruth,

You are not legally allowed to use any of their designs (e.g. images, graphics, etc) or their code, unless you have their permission.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi mul88tiii

Nick is right there in that legally its safer not to copy anything directly.

It is certainly safer to borrow from a non-profit (who might not mind at all, and might even encourage it in some circumstances) than Apple, IBM or a big company with expensive lawyers. But, generally the "don't copy" advice holds.

The big exception is when explicitly give you permission. That's what we do on our blog: ostraining.com/blog. Down on the right-hand side you'll see "The License for Our Tutorials" together with the rules under which people can borrow our work. More here: creativecommons.org/licenses/
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

I didn't imply to take anything directly when I sent the images. I was planning on using a wordpress donation/non-profit template but I can create or replace a button in the template with one that has a unique icon in the corner (or center) that links to a list.

I can create divs with alternating background colors -they didn't invent that (or a two column 10 row table which I have in the past) I just want to know when something crosses the line. (like dollars4schoolz would be a bad idea - especially since the new site is for the homeless)

Earmarking funds to go to specific purchases isn't new.
Anyway just sorting it all out.
Perhaps my client has ties to the dollars4schools nonprofit and that is why he is familiar with it.

Hi Ruth,

Using ideas and concepts is OK (unless they have them patented), so you're more than free to do something similar with your client's site.

Hope this helps! :)

Kind regards,
Nick
