I'm running the latest version of wordpress, and have just tried to create a 'custom menu' to replace the 'primary navigation' menu, in both the Twenty Eleven 1.3 and Twenty Ten 1.3 themes.

I found that in both themes that the:

'Add to menu' - creates the vertical list of menu items, but when I ' Save Menu', this list of menu items gets reduced by about one third (the bottom 1/3 vanishes).

And, true to form, its only the resulting list that appears in the Primary navigation position.

Am I missing something? Is there a limit on the number of menu items in custom menus?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Hi GWS,

No, there isn't a limit so there must be another issue. Can we get a link to the page to take a quick look?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick

The site is still under development so I would rather not make the page public yet. Could I send you a message with the link somehow?

Have sent email Nick,

Have just noticed something in the custom menu section that may be relevant.

16 Menu Items are marked 'Page' on the right side, by the downward pointed arrow.
Whilst the bottom 2 are marked 'Custom'. (Please view screen shot).

I am not able to add any menu items below these last 2 items.
I have another 16 menu items to add.

Thanks Nick

Hi Nick

Have just found this post which seems to explain why there is a problem after 16 items as I mentioned:

Unable to add more menu items in WordPress?

Have asked web host to make that update, so lets see what happens.
Cheers
GWS

Hi Steve/ Nick,

Just to let you know that that post on the 'swordfishsoup' site was helpful.

The web host said, however, that a 'suhosin setting' to '5000' was a bit excessive, so the 'suhosin setting' was set to '500', and the functionality that was needed returned.

So it would seem that a setting anything between 500-5000 should work.

All the best
GWS

No Worries. Presumably, not all web hosts need to be asked to change these settings, as the issue would be a lot more common on your Q/A.

So I'm guessing that web hosts that advertise themselves as optimised for Wordpress, would have this setting already in place, and that just because a web host offers one click Wordpress installations with Fanatastico, does not mean that their server environments are optimised for Wordpress.

I installed Server Buddy and this gives warnings for several Server Configuration Parameters (see screenshot), but I am not sure whether these parameters would read any better on a web host such as Hostgator or Bluehost.

What do you think? (Apologies if I'm going a bit off topic)

Regards
GWS

Hi GWS,

That's right. It's the first time I've heard of that happening before.

Warnings you can usually safely ignore, while errors usually require attention. Each host is different, however shared hosts do tend to have their max execution limit and memory limit down to the minimums, however those can be increased if needed.

Kind regards,
Nick
