TOPIC: Changing theme and cart

Changing theme and cart 1 year 2 months ago #43853

Hi,

I would like to change my theme & with it, also the shopping cart plugin. However, do I risk losing all the product information etc I have already added to my site/store?

Is there a safe way of doing this? Should I activate a new theme first or add a new cart plugin. For example, I'm currently using a theme based on Woocommerce. I would like to change theme & plugin to WP ecommerce. Can I do that without losing all the products I've already imported & added?

Thanks

Hi Rachel

That really depends on which cart you're using. A good shopping cart should provide an import / export option.

WP E-commerce is a good cart as such, it does have an import option: website-experts.ca/how-to-import-product...merce-for-wordpress/

Which cart are you using at the moment?

Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm using Woocommerce at the moment. I had a look at the tutorial from the link you sent me. Does that mean I have to put all the files onto csv first, then import them all? They won't still be there is I change theme?
I haven't had much luck with imports in the past, so that's slightly worrying. How could I put them all on csv, via my host's control panel?

Also, it mentioned that I can't import product images. Does that mean that even if they're already in my installation's media, they won't link to the products? Is there a way of getting around that?

Thanks

Woothemes makes a product importer that is available for a fee.

Check that out.

Hi,

Thanks for that. Actually though I already have the Woothemes importer. I've had some problems with it, but I'm guessing now those same problems could happen with any importer.

My main problem is that even though all the images have the correct & matching name to that in the csv image column, & have all been uploaded into the media (they show in the content/uploads file) when I do an import they don't match to the product. I've been adding the images manually for a long time, but now I would like to change my theme I'm scared it will all happen again.

In fact, I've already got another theme set up on a second site & tried an import with the WP ecommerce product importer deluxe, but it's exactly the same. It imports the info but doesn't link to the image. Now I'm scared I may have to start all over from scratch. Is there any way I can link the images to the product & product pages?

Also, I tried an export of the products on my first site with Woocommerce. It's in an xml file. Do I have to save that & then change the format to csv? Do I do that via Microsoft excel?

Thanks

Hi Rachel,

By default, the WP E-commerce importer doesn't import images unfortunately. However, the following is a good tutorial on how to import images into WP E-commerce:
www.haycroftmedia.com/archives/160/wp-e-...images-to-csv-upload

Let me know if you have any questions or get stuck after giving the tutorial a try.

Kind regards,
Nick
