TOPIC: Changing content background colour

Changing content background colour 1 year 1 week ago #45730

Hi,

I would like to change the content background colour on my site. I am using the theme Abundance, which gives me the option to change the text colours & background colour etc, but not the main body content background.

I have tried contacting the theme's support, but they have never replied. In fact, I've never heard from them, not even the pre-sales question I asked, which is strange but I liked the theme & bought it anyway.

I've also done some research on Google. I read that I can add a code to the theme's style sheet. I tried to do that but I couldn't find a file called Style sheet & so I don't know which folder is which, and I don't the code I should use either.

I would be really grateful if someone could offer me any advice on this. Any ideas?

As always,Thanks

Hi Rachel,

You should take our CSS coding course which will answer give you the skills you need to do this and more www.ostraining.com/courses/class/coding/css/

In the meantime, use Firebug in the Firefox browser to inspect the elements of the page. It will tell you where the css file is located and which code controls the body background color.

This deals with Joomla but it shows you how to use Firebug.

If you send us a link to the web page, we can help you track it down and suggest how to change it.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for that information, that's very useful. I will find some time to go through those tutorials. However, if you don't mind having a look at it I would be really grateful, as it would probably take me quite a while to figure it all out. The site is www.objectivesoul.co.uk. But in the meantime, I will also have a look at the tutorials.

Thanks a lot

Hi Rachel,

If you open in firefox with firebug installed, and right click on the background and choose Inspect Element, you'll be able to track down any CSS you need to find.

In the screen shot, you can see that you have the background color set in two places. The blue links to the right are links to the actual style sheet you need to edit to make the changes.

The first one points to the the url, so it's probably coded into the header.php.
The second one is in a style sheet at
www.objectivesoul.co.uk/wp-content/theme...css/minimal-skin.css

If you highlight any element, it will give you information on whatever you highlight. The second screenshot shows you the location of the background for the content area.

Hi Ed,

That's great. Thanks a lot for that information. I would just like to check that I've got the right part to for the content background. Is it;

wrap-all #main minimal skin.css (line 28)
background: none repeat scroll 0 0 ffffff;

I got that from the screen shot below. I had a look in the css style sheet, which I found this time round (didn't find it the first time). However, that's just rows & rows of codes etc. I had a close look at line 28 but could find that background: none etc part. Am I looking in the right place?

Thanks again for your time?

Hi Rachel

Sorry, to jump in but two quick notes here ...

1) the support forum is for things not covered in the training. Our aim is to teach you www.ostraining.com/support-faq/
Rather than do it for you, we will always to try to explain how you can do something. We'll guide you through the process, answer questions and write tutorials for you, but the focus will be on empowering you.
So, please do take advantage of the CSS course here: www.ostraining.com/courses/class/coding/css/

2) Any theme provider that doesn't answer questions isn't worth using. If they don't answer simple emails, they probably won't be providing security updates and other important services.

OK, back to the issue at hand ...

Ed is right on the code that is generating the white background. However, this might be a more complex theme that controls the CSS in more complicated ways.

Could you send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the theme files, please?

Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Hi Steve,

Well said & point taken. In Italian 'you're right' is translated as 'you have reason', which is pretty fitting in this case. I have done quite a lot of your css course already, & have to admit it's really good & I feel much less overwhelmed by the 'world of css' already. I couldn't continue asking assistance for these things forever, and 'empowering' myself with the knowledge to do it myself is definitely the only plausable way forward. I was just avoiding it as I found it all very intimidating!!

Anyway, I also realized that my theme has a Quick CSS box on the theme options style page. I didn't know how to use that before but after doing some of the training I put in the right code & voilĂ , it worked. So much easier than I ever imagined!!!!

Thanks to you both Ed & Steve for assisting & pushing me to get this far & sorry Ed for not taking your advice the first time round!! :-)
