Hi, In the tutorials overview list you have and icon that marks articles that have been viewed. How do you activate this ?
Thanks John

Hi and welcome, John!

It is automatically active for all students. When you view a lesson, it's marked as viewed. To reset it, you can clear your cookies.

Or are you wondering how to do something similar for your site?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi John,

OK, in that case, could you provide a bit more detail about what exactly you need?

1) What Joomla version are you using?

2) Do you want to let users be able to see what they've viewed, or do you want to track what users have viewed? Or both?

3) Are you wanting this to be for articles only?
-If so, do you want it for category list layout or for individual articles in a single article layout?
-If not, for which extensions are you wanting it?

To be honest, Joomla doesn't have a lot of extensions that keep track of these type of things. We use Guru (extensions.joomla.org/extensions/living/...-a-culture/lms/18393) for that area. So if you need a LMS (learning management software) then I'd suggest you go with it.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply

1) What Joomla version are you using?
Joomla 2.5.4

2) Do you want to let users be able to see what they've viewed, or do you want to track what users have viewed? Or both?
Both

3) Are you wanting this to be for articles only?
-If so, do you want it for category list layout or for individual articles in a single article layout?

Still deciding but probably both
-If not, for which extensions are you wanting it?

To be honest, Joomla doesn't have a lot of extensions that keep track of these type of things. We use Guru (extensions.joomla.org/extensions/living/...-a-culture/lms/18393) for that area. So if you need a LMS (learning management software) then I'd suggest you go with it.

I have looked at the Guru vidoes an most of the questions are probably answered there. However if you have any information to add I would appreciate that. I have some big decisions as I have a large site featuring lots of videos and articles but not happy with the flow and logic. All based on CB Subs for access. So a lot of work to change over and not certain of benefits if I do.

Thanks for the info, John!

Are you not happy with the flow and logic of your current site, or Guru?

Do you like the current user experience on our site? If so, we're using the 1.5 version of Guru while the 2.5 version has a lot more features and likely has a smoother user experience even (since they are actively improving that one), however I haven't had time to test the 2.5 version.

Kind regards,
Nick

HI Nick,

Guru looks good It is my site that seems to lack an easy flow.
I will have to do a lot of thinking about the benefits of changing to Guru though. It will be a lot of work.

Yes your site is good

Hi John,

Great! A least you have an option now.

If you want, you can post the link in this forum topic and I can take a quick look to give you an idea of how long it would take. Or let me know how many videos, etc, you have that you need moved over to Guru.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi and welcome to OSTraining, John

Just to chip in quickly, I'd say there's a valid reason why this isn't more common and why it might be hard to find a reliable solution ... keeping track of who's seen what is not easy.

For example, Guru for Joomla 1.5 bases viewing on cookies. The downside to that is we can lose track if you use a lot of different computers or clear your cookies often.

Another option is to record everything that every user has seen in a database. I believe Guru for Joomla 2.5 does that. The downside is that a large site with a lot of users will find their database getting really big and that can become hard to manage.

Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Thanks for your advice and responses.
At this stage I estimate approx 150 vids. I have to tidy up my categories etc and get a clearer picture of what is there - This thing has grown a bit like "topsy" with old articles and changing ideas of how to categorize also changing from 1.5 to 2.5 I need to settle, sort and tidy.

Thanks John

Hi John,

You're welcome!

150 videos would take around 2-5 days (just a guess), depending on how organized you area.

They have a 90-day money-back guarantee if you wanted to give it a test spin.

Kind regards,
Nick
