When i open any page on my site, i realise the url link reads something like this:
www.mcuac.com/tuition/index.php?option=c...le&id=131&Itemid=161.

But this to me is such a long link, but i would like it to read something like:
www.mcuac.com/tuition/Inspiration Leader..

what do i need to change to ensure that for all the pages, i discard the long link, and have a straight forward link as exampled above...!!!

Hello mwathani,

Yes, rename the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess, thn turn on your SEF urls and url rewrite in the Global Configuration.

Cheers,

Hi Mwathani,

Go to your main Joomla directory using an FTP program or the file manager in your hosting control panel.

You will see a file called htaccess.txt. Rename it or make a copy of it and call it .htaccess

Then in global configuration check Yes for SEF urls and URL Rewrite. I included some screen shots for you.

SEO Settings
Search Engine Friendly URLs No Yes
Use Apache mod_rewrite No Yes
Add suffix to URLs No Yes

above is how my SEO SETTINGS looks like.
when i select all to YES, and change the htaccess.txt to htaccess . it gives the error i had pasted above.

but when i only select YES for :SEF URLs only, the error disappears, it opens the link, but the link is slightly longer. this is how it looks like after clicking:
www.mcuac.com/tuition/index.php/testimonials

you notice it has a "/index.php/" which i would want not to appear on any page.
my wish is to have it appear as:
www.mcuac.com/tuition/testimonials.

Any help would be appreciated before you close the sessions.

First set all those back to No so you reset all your urls.

Then
Set SEF Settings to Yes.
Apache rewrite to yes.
Add suffix to no

Go to your Menu Item Manager for that menu, and click rebuild. If that doesn't work, try deleteing the menu items and putting them back.

Hi ED.
i followed your steps above. I reset everything to NO, changed the htaccess as requested, and also re-set the SEF, APACHE as instructed. but then, I didnt understand where the "Menu Item Manager for that menu, and click rebuild." is located. I didnt get that clearly...kindly make it more clearer. so, that i check if it will work.

regards.

Here is a screen shot of where the Rebuild icon is located.

Go to Menus > Menu Manager
or Menus > Main Menu (or the name of the menu that needs to be rebult.)

I have repeatedly tried logging in and I cannot get past the home page.

I tried logging into the front end and I got an error
XML-RPC Error (0): Error reading from database

I don't know how you have your administration set up, but I've never seen anyone set it up so you get returned to the home page.

I could log in with the first credentials you sent, but the access level wasn't high enough.

Have you made changes to the Joomla core files?

I would suggest that you make a new Joomla installation without any modifications, then copy this data base over to it so you have a test site. Then solve the problem on the test site so you don't have to work on the live site.

Hi MW
How can i be able to move all the files and directories instantly and have the live site finally on the test site i have just created on my desk-top?

Sure, that can be done, although not instantly. With practice it can be done in between 5 to 15 minutes.

Give this tutorial a try: www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/test-site-akeeba-backup/
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.
