TOPIC: Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64)

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41277

Hello Tessa,

Thank you for previous response.

I understand from JoomlArt that support for 1.7 has now ended and they suggest that I update to Joomla 2.5. I would like to do this as I don't want to go live and then have to upgrade again in 6 months time.

I am told that the upgrade is "quite easy" and can be done from the back end of the site as a one click excercise for Joomla 1.7 to 2.5 using the update button. However, I gather that it has not worked too well on a few sites where and that it can be down manually by downloading from Joomla.org.

I am led to believe that RSS is a feature of 2.5. This is great as I used an RSS plugin on my 1.5 site. Also, that whilst comments are not part of the Joomla core. JA Comment is being worked on at the moment and should be available for J2.5 very soon.

My questions are:

1). From your experience, which method would you recommend to upgrade to 2.5 (1-click upgrade from the backend or downloading from Joomla.org?
2) Can you then give me step by step instruments on how to upgrade to 2.5 using the method you recommend (bearing in mind that I will be upgrading from my localhost upgrade i.e. //locahost/Joomla1.7/jupgrade)?
3). When will comments be a part of Joomla core?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks.

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

I hope you don't mind me answering even though you addressed it to Tessa.

1) 1-Click

2) Sure, give this tutorial a try:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-update-joomla-17-to-25/

3) It likely won't be soon but the latest version of JA Comment should work fine in Joomla 2.5

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41299

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your response. I will give the 1-click option a go. I guess I will need to make a copy of my local 1.7 site before I upgrade. Should I simply copy the //localhost/Joomla1.7/Jupgrade directory to another location?

Hi Joyce,

You can backup your site on localhost by simply copying the folder and pasting it, but remember the most important part of your website is the database, which is stored in a separate location. Remember to login to phpmyadmin and export your database file as a backup. :-)

Or you can also install Akeeba Backup which is a simple 1-click quick backup of your website and database. :-)

Hi Joyce,

Give our "How to Backup a Joomla Site" tutorial a try :) It's written with references to Joomla 2.5 but the same thing applies to 1.7. Here's a direct link to the tutorial:

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41512

Hello,

Having successfully backed uo my site, I attempted to upgrade to 2.5 but wasn't successful. I found the update for 2.5 under Extension Manager, then I checked the box next to Joomla, clicked on update and received the following error:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:\wampserver64\www\Joomla1.7\jupgrade\libraries\joomla\installer\helper.php on line 80

Please can you help?

Many thanks.

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome!

Download the following file:
joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/16...e-Update_Package.zip

Then install it as you would a normal extension.

Joyce,

I have recently experienced upgrading issues. After installing admin tools, as Nick suggested, it made upgrading to current Joomla versions a breeze.

I could definitely recommend that method for you. :-)

Hi Joyce,

Either upgrade or full reinstall is fine. Your pick. I would do full reinstall, though, since your site is having so many other issues and a reinstall is likely to fix some of those other issues as well.

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41536

Hello Nick,

When I logged into the backend, I saw that it was on version 2.5 already. So I didn't do a reinstall. Instead, I then used the database fix and all seems well in the backend. I haven't updated my template (JA Teline IV).

However, when I attempt to go the my site, I get the following error:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:\wampserver64\www\Joomla1.7\jupgrade\libraries\joomla\database\database\mysql.php on line 528

Can you help me with this one?

Many thanks.

Hi Nick,

I haven't upgraded my JA Teline IV template to the 2.5 version. So what will happen to my data / database and template if I do a full reinstall?

With thanks and kind regards,

Hi Joyce,

Using Admin Tools' reinstall only reinstalls the core files. Extensions, such as templates, are not affected :)

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41628

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your speedy response. So, once I've reinstalled, if I want to upgrade my template to the latest version for Joomla 2.5, how do I do that and keep the data / database structure for my JA Teline 1.5 template?

Kind regards,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

To update your Joomlart template, you install a component called ja-ext-manager, which comes with your Joomlart template.

Go to Extensions Manager > Templates > Check Update

And it will let you know if there is a newer version of your template. If there is a newer version, it will allow you to install it with a 1 click button.

:-)

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41644

Hi Tessa,

Thanks for your email. Where do I obtain the ja-ext-manager component for 2.5 from?, which comes with your Joomlart template. I have tried looking at my template via template manage but no such luck.

Once I am able to upgrade the template will I still have my original data / database structure intact?

Thanks.

Joyce.

Joyce, when you download a template it comes zipped with your template, along with several plugins and modules. You can find it on the downloads page.

It shouldn't affect your database. It should only be updating template code.

Hi Joyce,

JA Teline isn't available for Joomla 2.5. You'd have to talk to JoomlArt's developers to see when it will be available.

You could however use the JA Teline IV template instead. Here's a direct link to it:
www.joomlart.com/joomla/templates/ja-teline-iv

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 1 month ago #41739

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your email. I will do the following:

1). Download the Joomla 2.5 version of JA Teline IV.
2). Install the tempalte onto my localhost 2.5

However, before I do steps 1) & 2) can you confirm that my existing data / database, menu structure, etc on my Joomla 1.5 version of JA Teline IV will not be overwritten when I install the new 2.5 version of JA Teline IV.

Additionally, will I need to make any changes to the any of the files for the J2.5 version of JA Teline IV (e.g index.php and template.css)?

Many thanks,

Joyce.

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome! We're glad we could be help!

That's correct. The sites are independent of each other.

As to whether or not you'll need to make any changes, that depends on whether not you want to make changes to the template :) If you like the way it is, then you wouldn't.

Upgrading from Joomla 1.7 to Joomla 2.5 (localhost using WampServer64) 2 years 4 weeks ago #41962

Hello,

I now have J2.5 up and "running" on my localhost with JA Teline IV for J2.5. I made the change to the Execution Time in the PHP.ini file (from 30 to 120 seconds). So now, I do not get the execution time error.
However, when I select a menu option (e.g. to click on "Sports") it takes about a minute (56 seconds) for the selection to be completed (whereas on the live site it takes about 3 seconds). How can I decrease the time it takes to select a menu option?

Many thanks,

Joyce
