TOPIC: Updating our version of Joomla and my screen went blank and I have a Fatal Error

Updating our version of Joomla and my screen went blank and I have a Fatal Error 1 year 7 months ago #56329

When I try to go to www.stsbus.com website this is what I receive:
Fatal error: Cannot access protected property ContentViewArticle::$user in /home/content/97/7712997/html/templates/stsbus_final/functions.php on line 40

I searched how to update our version of Joomla and followed the steps from the OS Training website and my computer locked up and came up with an error page and now our website is down and I have no clue what to do or how to fix it.

When I go to the admin login for Joomla this is what I receive:

Warning: require_once(/home/content/97/7712997/html/libraries/cms.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/97/7712997/html/administrator/includes/framework.php on line 41

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/content/97/7712997/html/libraries/cms.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/php5/lib/php') in /home/content/97/7712997/html/administrator/includes/framework.php on line 41

Hi and welcome, kfleming!

What Joomla version are you using? Do you have access to your host's file manager or FTP?

Kind regards,
Nick

My old version was Joomla 1.6.3 and no I do not have access. We had someone create our website in May of 2011 and I have had him update as needed and then we decided that we needed to take care of it because he wasn't.
Thanks,
Kiley

Can you give us some details on what you did? What version did you start with and what version were you updating to?

You might be able to get a backup from your webhost. You should also check with them and see when the last backup was made. You may need it.

We'll try to coach you through this.

Call their tech support and get all your access information. Get your FTP access username and password and access to your control panel username and access.

Download your everything from your www folder on the server to your local computer or some other account so you have a copy of eveerything.

Use the phpMyadmin to export and download a copy of your current database.

See if GoDaddy has a recent backup. After you have created a backup of the site you have now, see if they can restore it. Let us know if you ca do this.

Hi kfleming,

Give the following tutorial a try please, which should correct your issues and also get you updated:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/upgrade-joomla-16-to-25/

In order to follow the tutorial, you have to fist have access to GoDaddy's file manager.
