TOPIC: Transfer question

Transfer question 1 year 2 weeks ago #44840

I built a joomla site on a .net domain, because at the time, I didn't have control of the .com server. (did not realize at the time, I could have built it on my server prior to but that's water under the bridge).

Anyway, once I have control of the .com, is there some way to transfer everything I have done with the .net to the .com? I'm thinking I probably will not be able to, but knowing you guys, you will come up with a way for me to do it. (I have a LOT of confidence in you!!!

What we are planning to do is park the two domains together so whatever is typed in you get the customer's site...BUT unfortunately it will say .net in the address bar and I worry about the customer's Search engine status that we have built up over several years with the .com name.

Thank you so much for all you do!!!

Hi
Here is a tutorial on doing what you want:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/move-a-cu...zed-joomla-template/
Basically use Akeeba to back up your site and database, move to the new location then use kickstart to unpack the site.
I would not recommend running 2 sites if they have the same content; google does not like duplicate content.

Mark

Hi Corky,

All the Akeeba extensions should work for Joomla 2.5 and 1.5. Let us know if that's not the case.

Nick

I'm getting ready to do this today and the video link you sent shows how to back up from localhost to live server. What I am going to be doing is backup from a 'live' .net server to 'live' .com server.

Does that make any difference?

Sorry to be so much trouble, I just don't want to mess up my client's web site.

Thanks!

Hi Corky,

No problem at all! That's why we're here! :)

The tutorial would still work. Think of the tutorial as moving from server to server.

Hope this helps!

Nick

Okay, I backed up my site with Akeeba and went to download the files and I get this message:
"Downloading backup files through your browser can result under certain circumstances to corrupt or partial downloads and subsequent restoration failure.
Are you sure you want to continue?"

It gives me the choices of Ok or Cancel. Doesn't give me a suggestion how better to do it. Good grief.

That is a kind of lame warning.

YOu can go ahead and do it via the browser and if it works when you try to restore it, that's ok.

But to make sure you get an uncorupted download, you probably want to use an FTP client like FileZilla or something. It's less likely to create an error.

Now I'm thinking I'm probably going to have to rebuild the entire site as I see this message in the documentation for Akeeba Kickstart:

"Trying to restore to the temporary URL of a cPanel host (e.g. 1.2.3.4/~username) will lead to restoration failure and your site will appear to be not working. This is normal and it's just how your server and CMS software work."

This is what I am trying to do so according to this message...it's not going to work? Am I right to think this?

Hi Corky,

Don't you have a domain for the the site? Could we get a link to your site to take a quick look?

Nick

Transfer question 11 months 1 week ago #48148

Nick,
The site is bharealestate.com and bharealestate.net

I had the .com on a real estate site service AgentBizup and wanted to have more control of the site and got to learn Joomla and purchased Hot Property from Mosets.

Not thinking it all out, I purchased the .net of the domain and built the joomla with hot property on the .net. When I got it all up and approved, we parked .com on it. Now my server guy allowed me to have a temporary url using an IP to transfer and rebuild the site on that without interfering with the parked domains.

If I'd thought it all out...I could have built the .com on my server while it was still with agentbizup...but I can't turn back the clock, unfortunately.

Corky,

Not sure if you got this sorted out or not. I looked at the site and it appears to be working. I can't tell from the last post if there is still a question here or not.

When you got rid of the temporary domain and pointed your .com to the server things should have started working. You shouldn't have to rebuild the site.

Let me know so we can be sure we answered this.

Cheers,
Ed

No, I've not yet got this sorted out. Sorry to be so much trouble.

I have yet to complete the process because Akeeba Kickstart does not recommend doing it when the server I am transferring the site to is 'temporary' due to the fact that the .com is parked on the .net domain.

So because of that, I will probably have to build from scratch on the temporary .com server. And I am not looking forward to that amount of work and time.

Hi Corky,

There's no need to build from scratch. Try the restore on the temporary URL. It should work for you. The only issue might be SEF URLs which would work once the permanent domain is pointed to the server.

Nick
