Such a strange issue it's hard to even explain - all links broken 1 year 1 month ago #44026

Okay, on my site www.mexicobeachexperts.com..... I'm not sure when this started happening, as I just discovered it today. Some possibly relevant history is that I upgraded to 1.5.25 in February. Maybe that's when it started happening...I don't know.

If you were to google "mexico beach experts azul sensatori" you would get this link: www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/i...-azul-sensatori.html

In the good old days (like, back before whatever broke.broke...) this was the link to the Azul Sensatori page.

Now that link goes to the article with the ID of 5. (See the 5 in the link?) Isn't that strange?

Why is that happening and how to I fix it?
Thank you for your help!

Hi Cathi,
I'm not support staff, but I did have a little bit of a look since support may not be back for a while.
I'm not sure I'm smart enough to figure it out without playing in your admin area (which I don't want to do).

I did notice that the link is going to ->
www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/i...-azul-sensatori.html

When I think you want the link to go to ->

www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/b...-azul-sensatori.html

This best-beaches category might be the thing that isn't right.

Hi Cathi,

I am guessing that Joomla is creating a URL for each path to the content. As you have multiple paths then you will have multiple URLs. I would recommend using a dedicated SEO tool that you can configure and get more control of your URLs.

What SEO tools are you using?
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

Hi Cathi,

It's unlikely to be because of upgrading Joomla.

Looks like you're using k2 for the page. Is that page associated with a k2 menu item in your main menu?

Kind regards,
Nick

Yes, it is a K2 item and there is a menu item (by tag) associated with it.

It's been the same for years...why would it change all of the sudden?
Thank you for your help!

Hi Cathi,

Sorry, I don't know why it would have changed. Perhaps someone changed a setting or there's a conflict with an extension.

Are you using any SEF extensions? For example, SH404SEF.

Try accessing the menu item and double checking the settings. Even if the settings do not need to be changed save it anyway. Then check the menu item again to see if that corrected things.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Cathi,

It's past midnight where Steve is, so he's not able to look at the issue right now for you.

Did you check to see if you have any SEF extensions and did you try the menu item options?Nick wrote:

I did. And I do know it was the middle of the night. I was hoping he could look today?

Also, just to be clear, it isn't just THIS K2 item getting mixed up with THIS article...it's every article being confused with every K2 item of the same number.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Cathi,
Also, just to be clear, it isn't just THIS K2 item getting mixed up with THIS article...it's every article being confused with every K2 item of the same number.

This might indicate that you have duplicate aliases. The SEF urls are possibly getting rewritten and confusing the issue. Check your aliases and see if anything you recently added has the same alias.

Cheers,
Ed

Nope, no conflict with any aliases. Plus, if it was an alias conflict, wouldn't it only screw up the pages with the conflict? This is every.single k2 item where there is an article with the same article.
Thank you for your help!

Does it happen if you turn of SEF urls and mod rewrite in global configuration?

Ugh, I hadn't wanted to try that. I fear the sky would fall in on me.

Okay, I'll try that now.

Okay, turned off mod rewrite and SEF URLs in Global Config. Of course, the question was irrelevant then because all of the URLs had changed to the funky Joomla URLs.

Then I turned them back on and the situation was still the same.

Have you renamed the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess?

If you haven't done that. Turn of mod-rewrite, change the name and turn it back on. If you have done it we'll have to look elswhere.

Again, this website has been in existence for years and the issue with the links was only discovered this week.

I think we need to look elsewhere.

Hi Cathi,

You're welcome!

Looks like Scott is right (great job, Scott!). The only issue issue is that it appears you added new sub-categories. For example to the Resorts category you may have added added Luxury (via a a k2 itemlist menu item using the tag Luxury).

So the following link:
www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/i...-azul-sensatori.html

should be:
www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/l...-azul-sensatori.html

This is similar to what you see in the k2 demo:
demo.getk2.org/categories/item/222-quisq...ro-in-mollis-pretium

Google takes a while to index new changes, however a sitemap is a good way to help Google index your site faster. Give the following tutorial a try:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/create-a-...r-google-bing-yahoo/

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

No, actually it doesn't help and isn't correct.

I realize that you can get different paths by following different menu items.

I didn't just add new categories. They've been there from the beginning and, up until just this week, the links I provided before went to the appropriate pages and they worked.

Now they don't.

Thank you anyway for trying.

Also, just to be clear...each hotel appears is tagged more than one way. Like, a hotel might be luxury, and also family friendly. So, they would appear under either menu option.

It's always been that way.

Are you sure that the links worked up until this last week? Or did you just notice this last week?

Your "The Resorts" menu item it is set to display an article. That article was created February 16, 2012. If you change your "The Resorts" menu item to be of type K2 Category, then links such as
www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/l...-azul-sensatori.html work. Therefore, it looks that around the 16th of February, the menu item was changed from a k2 category display to a Joomla article and that's when the issue would have started occurring.

So if you want the links to work without the tags, then you would have to restore "The Resorts" menu item back to a k2 category list. Otherwise, you should 301 redirect the old links to the new ones.

Hope this helps! :)

Nick

Hi Cathi,

Since you don't have that many URLs, the simplest solution is to just manually redirect them in your .htaccess. For example:
Redirect 301 /the-resorts/item/5-azul-sensatori.html http://www.mexicobeachexperts.com/the-resorts/luxury/item/5-azul-sensatori.html

So basically the syntax is:
Redirect 301 /old-relative-URL www.domain.com/absolute-url

Hi Cathi,

No, not necessarily. You'd still have to specify which 404 link redirects to which page. Also, sh404SEF adds a lot of extra features that might not be used, but rather might cause compatibility issues.

ReDJ is a fabulous redirect extension to use if you're looking to stay clear from .htaccess modifications:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-ma...url-redirection/7189
