would a lot of traffic slow down or potentially shut down my site? just curious...i havent even done advertising and one of my articles has 650 hits. i am concerned as i was considering doing advertising this weekend on facebook, and dont wont to incur problems.

Yes, but 650 visitors is not a lot, unless:

1) you're getting that every couple of minutes
2) you're on a really bad server

A Joomla site on reasonable hosting should be easily capable of handling 10,000+ visitors per day, without much optimization, particularly if they're spread out over the course of the day.

im using google analytics, which has a bunch of stuff i havent even figured out yet. very informative.

Traffic is always good news. It might be a good idea to start getting familiar with google analytics. =]
