Hi Ronald,

A good video streaming extension for Joomla would be found here: extensions.joomla.org/extensions/multime...eo-broadcasting/7449

Is this something you are looking to do?

Or Udemy:
www.Udemy.com

Or Guru:
www.joomla-guru.com/

As for web server questions, could you open that in a new topic? :-)

So we can continue the video streaming discussion here. Thank you :D
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

the website i want to build is about dance lessons similar to website but the difference will be that people have to pay monthly to have access to the videos and the streaming video ? i think i need a stream server so i can keep old videos and customers can watch it anytime they want as long they pay monthly.

check this website something similar but it has look more professional

Hi sronald

Subscriptions and videos will be the hard part of this for you.

The actual display of content is the easy piece and could be done via Guru, K2 or a lot of other extensions.

I'm going to put up a blog post today about the ins-and-out of doing subscriptions successfully.

I'll see if I can write one with video advice for you too.

HI sronald_76,

You can get hosting that has streaming video capabilities from Hostgator. You usually can't get it from an ordinary shared hosting account. You will need at least a VPS (Virtual Private Server) account, a dedicated server, or a cloud account that has streaming capabilities.

These types of accounts usually cost more. For true streaming you need to have a feature called FFMPEG installed on the server. If you don't have this, then the alternative is to use a service. We use one called Brightcove. There are quite a few streaming services. Then you can use a shared hosting account and embed the videos in the articles.

Hope that helps a bit. I'm sure Steve's blog article will give you lots more details.

Cheers,
Ed

that's what my partners and I were thinking about the cloud account. what do you mean with the shared hosting? do you think brightcove is the best choice for what i want to do? because i am gonna have lots of people watching the live streaming . do you thing a dedicated server is better ? i was chatting with hostgater and that's what they told me .

Your choice depends on your skill level and what kind of support you can provide or need for yourself.

If you're beginner to intermediate web developers I would say get a good hosting account with Hostgator and use a service like Brightcove. There are others, you might want to investigate.

Videos need to be in the proper format, with the proper file type and require conversion and compression to make them work really well. If you know how to do all that, the dedicated server might be a solution. But if you don't, the service should be able to handle all that for you. So if you aren't sure what you are doing, use a great hosting company and a good video service, at least that's what I would do.

If you're experts already, then you might like the control you have with a dedicated server.

You can always step up to a dedicated server and bring the videos inhouse in the future. You'll probably need to get a development test site working before you go live anyway. You don't have to start at the top.

These are just my opinions. I hope they help you make a decision.

Cheers,
Ed

If you are going to have a lot of traffic, and use a lot of disk space the dedicated server would be better.

On a shared server you may have other people who are using their sites to a maximum and slowing yours down. If you are using the service for the videos, shared hosting would probably be adequate.

I'd start with shared. With hostgator it's really easy to migrate to a dedicated server at any time.

I just checked with Steve for you. He hasn't had chance to publish it yet. He's working on it today and thinks it will be published today.

He's got a lot to do, so be easy on him :)

Hi Ronald

Sorry for the delay. Here's the advice I have: www.ostraining.com/blog/general/subscription-billing/

Call this a draft for now. I'd love to know if you have more questions not answered in that post. I'll be happy to improve this further.

Steve,

I just watched the video very interesting i checked those companies too.
i was on brightcove website and they usually work with this company for subscription www.invideous.com/. what do you think ?

my other question i don't want customers to share the password so how do you block that? or the subscription company do that.
i can give you and example i have an account with netflix and i can give to my brother the password to watch any movie on his comp. how do you block that ?who is in charge of that ?

basically i am gonna need a dedicated server (to handle much traffic) from hostgator, stream server from brightcove and another company for the subscription.

can you check this website Panavision.tv
www.panavision.tv . the only difference you can watch videos online for free

Hi Ronald,

1) www.invideous.com/ looks like a very novel concept! I really like what they are proposing.

2) Sorry, it's impossible to prevent users from sharing passwords. An alternative is to use a plugin such as Login One! that only allows one person to be logged in at a time:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-...gin-protection/15932

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Ronald

www.invideous.com/ looks like a pretty sophisticated way to sell video access in a lot of places. It doesn't like a way to sell subscriptions on just one site.
i don't want customers to share the password so how do you block that?

You can use the plugin Nick suggested above, however even then, you'd only be able to protect yourself while they were logged in.

Hi Ronald,

You're welcome!

Good question. That's based off of IP, which isn't a reliable method, since IPs change and also since a user might want to use their iPad, iPhone, PC, their second PC, etc. It would create more annoyance to your users and support requests for you, than it would actually help you.

Kind regards,
Nick
