Hello,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I cannot seem to do some changes to my Joomla 1.5.25 website so I've decided to migrate to 1.7.
Can you please give me a few pointers about this process? (Please read the excerpt from ostraining.com (ostraining.com) below which is followed by my 2 - questions?) I am finding your book helpful in the creation of building a new site using 1.7. I have successfully upgraded the site from 1.5.14 to 1.5.25. Now I could truly use some help finding out which plugins and components I need to upgrade and when do I do this.

Step 1. FIRST Get ready to migrate www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/sp-upgrad...-15-to-17-migration/
To make it quick, start with preparation.
Make a list of all your plugins and components. These will not be copied to the new site, and you will most likely need to upload versions compatible with Joomla 1.7.
QUESTION - Here is a list of my plugins. Do I need to upload versions of any of these compatible with Joomla 1.7? Thanks, Jim

Most of those plugins are part of Joomla core. Only ones that need to be upgraded are third party ones you added yourself.

It's best to update the plugins after you have created the new version of the site. Then you can compare the list of installed plugins against the list on your old site and you only need to upgrade the ones that did not transfer. I suggested collecting them first so everything would be on hand when you needed it, but in your case, it would be easier to wait. As long as you have the old site you can always compare the installed plugins.

I checked Rocket Theme and they do have an upgraded version of the Moxy Template. You should get the upgraded version from them. They will have upgraded versions of all the extensions that go along with the template as well.

Be sure to backup, and preserve your original site until you are completely sure you have the new site up and running.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
Ed

Thank you for the help edandrea. Can you tell which ones on the list are 3rd party please sir? I did not build the site and cannot tell one from the other.
I truly appreciate this advice.

Looks like admin tools and rokcandy are the only third party ones I can see on that list.

Finishing the upgrade and looking for the ones that are missing, and then replacing them, is the best way to make sure you have upgraded all the modules and plugins you need to run the site.

Hello Friends,

I checked the Rocket Theme website and they do have Moxy just like you said. They want me to pay $50.00 to join the forum in order to download Moxy. Am I correct or should I be able to upgrade for free since I already have the software?

Best To All,

Jim

This would be up to RocketTheme. Not all companies give free upgrades. According to their FAQ.

"What happens when my RocketTheme Club Membership expires?
Once your RocketTheme Club Membership expires, you will no longer have access to the template and style download sections, the member support forums, or new template, style and extensions releases.

The entitlements included in your membership are not time limited, so you can continue using the templates, themes, and styles on the sites you set up 'during' your membership, even after your membership has expired. However, you must renew your membership in order to receive additional entitlements and set up new sites using RocketTheme templates, themes, and styles."

It appears you can keep using the template, but if you need support, upgrades or downloads you need to be a member.

It's not clear on their site if upgrades are part of this policy. You'll have to ask them.

I guess I should just pay someone who has a subscription to upgrade for me. Would you consider giving me a quote to do this?

Thank You,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Your idea sounds nice. Wish it was that easy to do. Some companies make their living off charging for support in return of giving free extensions. Without that charge those extensions probably won't be around because the developers will be looking for a job elsewhere.

But... maybe you can post on template forums looking for someone with this file already. Not sure if that would be an effective route. :-)

I've been in these situations before and searched everywhere for a free download. Most of the time I result to paying - so just giving you the heads up. ;-)

Definitely keep us updated on migrating your Joomla site because I want you to successfully install it and everything go smooth.

Remember to backup your site as well as your databases. :D

Tessa Mero

Jim,

I appreciate your kindness to offer me work but I am on a full work load already with my job, school, and OSTraining.

But I can refer you to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. who does custom work for people for $100/hour. That small fee will probably save you a lot of money and many hours of time. I know he does custom work but not sure on migration work. You can ask him. :-)

Hi Jim,

I can arrange to get this done for you. Send me an email at ed@ostraining so we can correspond directly instead of using the forum.

I have decided to pay Rocket Theme the $50 and do this myself. Can someone please suggest a good link that will walk me through the process of migrating from 1.5 to 1.7?
Thanks A Bunch!!!

Hi
The decision, I do not had an account with Rockettheme.
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/migrating...mla-15-to-joomla-17/

Remember to make sure you are using the latest 1.5 version (upgrade to 1.5.25 first)
Back up using Akeebs and if possible using your cpanel as an extra.
You will find it quite straight forward. If you have problems then please ask.
You will also find tutorials on the Jupgrade web site.
All the best
Mark

Hello,

I am running jupgrade now and I am in a window labeled "Checking" with the following error message.

Notice: Undefined property: stdClass::$timelimit in /home/content/11/5390911/html/bran/administrator/components/com_jupgrade/includes/jupgrade.class.php on line 156
OK

I have been in this window for quite some time now. It seems to be stalled.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
J

Check the parameters item in the top right on the page where you click the start upgrade button. I had to change the table prefix and also changed the item about a time limit.

Hi
Just discovered this hot off the press from Ed. Fantastic tutorial which should sort out your problem. The solution is really what Tessa describes above.
