K2 tag structure for a website 9 months 3 weeks ago #52658

Hi great people with great tutorials!

I just watched all episodes needed till now about joomla 2.5 including Joomla K2. I'm a advanced skilled joomla user new to K2 or any cck.

Now the thing is, I have a customer, and including my own site, who need to work with tags. Not for the cloud tags, but with special functions.

below a casus of a site which is about a company selling fruits:
-the world has several countries with growers
-each of the countries have one or more growers
-each growers grows one or more type of fruits

the menu items need to contain the next buttons.
-homepage top header is a "meet our world" button (worldmap with address markers, once clicked on a marker it will go to an articlepage about this grower or maybe the growers country page first were customers could see more growers in that country)
-meet our growers (images about the growers with a link to the growerspage)
-fruit overview page (once clicked on a type of fruit it displays the fruit left and at the right it displays a menu module inside the content with several buttons which are probably tag related? for that type of fruit (for instance, a lime grows in brazil and 2 growers have it.)

whats the best tactic to start and does k2 cover all? Since I need to understand the structure first?

What I could imagine is this:

make tags of all countries
make tags of all farmers
make tags of all fruits

make articles

combine the articles with any of the related tags

make a menu module and put it into an fruit article

I hope I could get a hand on the structure of setting up this site?

If that's included into the training ofcourse. I'll first want to try myself and if I can;'t figure it out, is it possible to get some help with understanding the matter of taging?

Hi accessvirus,

It's going to be hard to build this and maintain this long-term using k2.

It sounds like you're building a directory and therefore I'd recommend taking a look at SobiPro instead:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/directo...tion/directory/16649

It's a directory extension that's very powerful and flexible. Here's our tutorial on it:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/sobipro-t...ssing-documentation/

Based on your scenario, you'd have a landing page, and then filters for fruit, country, grower, etc, which would help the visitor find what they are looking for.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

does drupal have these sort of tag functions out of the box, cause my host does not allow some functions inside sorbi pro so I cannot work with that. And fabrik seems extreme complicated when I don't have any clue how to start for this project.

Hi Accessvirus
does drupal have these sort of tag functions out of the box

No, this requirement is complex enough that you won't be able to find this out of the box.

If you were to do this in Drupal you'd need Apache Solr search: drupal.org/project/apachesolr
my host does not allow some functions inside sorbi pro

Can you explain that more? It certainly sounds unusual for your host to block items in an extension.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

My provider installed XSL and SOAP. (no idea what those do)

But the "System program execution should be enabled" warning is very unsafe and asks allot resources.

Should I ask the forum of sobi pro for this or do you guys/girls know what that warning does and does it give problems?

also:

I noticed that K2 has tagging as well as sobi pro. Why is sobi pro recommended for my project? Does it something extra? I can't figure out the tactics to start writing a plan.

Hi accessvirus,

Glad to hear that your host got things working for you!

As to "System program execution should be enabled", system program execution functions are functions that come with PHP and can be enabled/disabled from your PHP.ini file. Take a look at the following documentation:
www.php.net/manual/en/ref.exec.php

Yes, since it's their product, it's generally best to ask them questions about it :)

It's simply because you're building a directory. That's what SobiPro is designed for. K2 is more a content manager rather than a directory manager.

I would start by first testing it out and playing around with it. At a test site, try following along with the tutorial to give you a good starting point:

Hope this helps!
