I just saw there is a security update for Joomla 2.5. First of all, my control panel showed that Joomla was up to date, which obviously, is incorrect. So I tried clicking the 'search for updates' button and got the following error message:
The PHP allow_url_fopen setting is disabled. This setting must be enabled for the updater to work.
I tried following your instruhp5.ini firl with the following codection in the recent email for locating the php.ini file. Although I am not using GoDaddy, it did have a php5.ini file.
I created a php5.ini fole with the following code:
allow_url_fopen = 1
and saved it in my Joomla 2.5 directory (which is a folder in the root directory).
This had no effect on changing the error message.
Please advise what I am doing wrong.

FYI, I am using 1and1 hosting and this is a migrated site using spupdate (which worked great)

Hi Ellen, here are 2 suggestions for you to try:

#1: create a file called php.ini containing the line, allow_url_fopen = 1 , Now save this ini file in the "administrator" folder & try running your update...

#2: Install Admin Tools:
www.akeebabackup.com/download/admintools.html
And use the auto update through here. It should be able to bypass that PHP url fopen error.
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

This is the first I've heard of this with 2.5, but it was a problem that was reported with 1.6/1.7 upgrades. Here are the solutions that worked then.

First one is the one you already tried, but they created the php.ini file in the adminsitrator folder.
create a file called php.ini containing the line
allow_url_fopen = 1
Now save this ini file in the "administrator" folder & try running your update

Note this is not a safe thing to do and you should remove this right after the update. Also some hosts will not allow it at all, which could be why it didn't work.

Second solution was to use Akeeba Admin tools to do the update. That seems to avoid the problem.
www.akeebabackup.com/download/admintools.html

I'll keep my eyes open for other people reporting this. If either of these solutions work, let us know so we let others know.

Cheers,
Ed

Thanks for tip Ed and the security heads up. I had the same issue. I used Admin tools as the core updater gave the same error as ellen. Same host too.

Hi Gilles,

Just to clarify, did you get things resolved using Admin Tools?

Kind regards,
Nick

I think so Nick. I had used the php.ini method before seeing Ed's note. I was able to update this way. I then installed Admin Tools. Will see if AT works next update.

Great! I'm glad it worked for you.

By the way, allow_url_fopen is not really a security issue unless you have poorly coded extensions, in the same way that PHP isn't a security issue unless you have poorly code extensions :)

Kind regards,
Nick

OK good to know, thanks Nick.
Having said that... would you use url_fopen as stated above? or not?

Sure, why not? Rochen has it on by default.

The big thing is making sure that allow_url_include is off. Turning off allow_url_include prevents the inclusion of a remote file using a URL (what a hacker would use). Almost every host has (or should have) this off.

Kind regards,
Nick
