Hi,

I'm still trying to solve this and found following:
(example on: dkvvf.siteflex.nl)

When I activate the left-sidebar-modules readmore-link right from the start (after activating the home-menulink in the top-menu), the problem arrises: layout breaks (sidebars vanish).
But when I first activate a reamore-link of another newsitem (in the middle-content-area) and then the reamore-link of the left-sidebar-module it works fine.....

I found out that the URL's are different in both cases.
Activating "left-sidebar-readmore-link" at once after hitting "home" generates: dkvvf.siteflex.nl/index.php/component/k2...-we-gaan-er-tegenaan

Activating same "left-sidebar-readmore-link" after activating content-item-readmore-link generates:
dkvvf.siteflex.nl/index.php/item/27-we-gaan-er-tegenaan

Any Idea why this readmore-link changes?

Thanks in advance

Mark

I think there are some duplicate elements. For example this link:
dkvvf.siteflex.nl/index.php/item/27-we-gaan-er-tegenaan
uses search engine friendly urls like a joomla article. While this one:
dkvvf.siteflex.nl/index.php/component/k2...-we-gaan-er-tegenaan
goes to a k2 component item.

Check to see that you don't have duplicate content or duplicate aliases, and that the module that is on the home page is the same module that is assigned to the interior page. You could have two copies of the custom html module referring to different pages.

One thing you can do is turn off SEF urls and URL rewriting and see if you get different links with those turned off.

Try it without SEF and let us know.

Cheers,
Ed

Well Ed,

You noticed it well..... there were 2 modules (k2 and HTML) with same title / alias.
I first turned off SEF and nothing changed. Then I unpublished (and later on deleted) the HTML-moduel and.... all worked as expected.

I was trying to solve this past 2 weeks and didn't get it.....

Thanks so much Ed now I can focus on the rest....

Have a nice day.

Whats the best approach, because I do like tu use SEO-friendly urls?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,

You probably need to redo the .htaccess file and turn on the SEF URLs again. There were changes written to the .htaccess file when you turned on SEF and url rewrite that weren't deleted when you turned them off. So make sure they are turned off now, then recreate the .htaccess file.

Completely delete the old .htaccess file. Get a new one from a copy of Joomla. I usually unzip a copy of joomla on my pc and get the htaccess.txt file that hasn't been changed by installation.

Load that to the the server and rename it .htaccess Then turn on the SEF urls Then turn on URL rewriting. It should put everything back to normal.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

I never turned on URL rewriting so I do not have an .htaccess active.
I only switched the SEF-friendly URL's - parameter in the Joomla-settings.
Should I start to use URL-rewriting (I can give it a try) to solve this?

Thanks

Try it. You might like the result. You can always turn it off again. Let's see if it makes things better. If not, let me know and we'll see if we can trouble shoot this further.

Hi Ed,

Turned on URL-rewriting after uploading the .htaccess (renamed .txt first).
Still same problem:

hitting left-col-readmore after first activating "HOME"-menu-item ==> NO sidebars
hitting left-col-readmore after "content-item-readmore" ==> sidebars visible

curious problem.

Thanks so far Ed.

Hi Mark,

YOu had two articles with the same alias. I changed the alias by adding some words to the end to make each unique. One was an article the other a k2 item.

Then I unpublished the article so you only have to deal with the k2 item. I think the problem here is with K2. It wants to keep displaying K2 category 7 item id 101 and there is no item 101. Although there may have been one that you deleted.

If I were you I would completely delete the troublesome article (and maybe all Joomla native articles). Delete the K2 item.

Then use Akeeba Admin tools to reinstall Joomla, then reinstall K2. It will rebuild your database. There are things in there that aren't getting refreshed. For instance this url shouldn't work at all, but it does dkvvf.siteflex.nl/index.php/item/27-we-gaan-er-tegenaan

Do you need K2? it causes lots of problems especially when you import categories and articles. It would be simpler without it.

Anyway try reinstallation. Also check extension manager for warnings and check the database after reinstall to see if you need to fix something.

You have a warning now "The maximum file size for uploads is set to less than 2MB which may impact on uploading large extensions." and you might want to fix that before you try to reupload K2. See www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/installation-problems/ to fix it.

Hi Ed

Thanks for taking the time to figure this out.
I do need K2 in this project because I need to make use of some contenttypes.
Anyway, I'll remove the items, and reinstall as you advised.
Let you know asap.
Thanks again, have a nice weekend

Don't work too hard this weekend. Sometimes taking a break makes things easier.

Let us know. Also don't be afraid to post this on the K2 forum. Someone else might be having a similar problem and already know the answer.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Despite off the weekend I'm still trying to solve this K2- matter.

I've did a total clean Joomla / K2 install see dkv.siteflex.nl/
added an htaccess to increase upload-limit and
ported the whole thing to a new subdomain on my server

The problem still occurs but I discovered one oddity:

If leftcolumn-readmore is activated after "Home"-menu-item activation the URL which is generated is different and sidebar disappears.

If leftcolumn-readmore is activated after another menu-item activation the sidebar shows up as expected.

I guess the HOME-menu-item must play a roll in this.

Ed the login-credentials are the same as previous (still active) urls I've sent you.

The new site resides on: dkv.siteflex.nl/

Hope this helps solving the problem.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark,

Have you tried to contact K2 support for this issue? We have noticed there are more than one person with the same issue.

Also, turn on your global configuration error reporting to maximum and see if you can find any errors on your pages. :-)

Another question, are you using the latest version of your extension that fixes all the latest bugs?
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

Hi Tessa,

Thanks for the reply.
I've indeed added a forum-post on the official K2-forum yesterday and I did get a first response from K2-member, see this link: getk2.org/community/New-to-K2-Ask-here-f...d-differently#160434

Their advice didn't solve the problem but maybe they can help me further.

This weekend I found a work-around by installing "advanced module manager" from nonumber: www.nonumber.nl/extensions/advancedmodulemanager

In the module-settings there is a param: "Include No ItemID"
Set this one to "Yes" and the modules is shown as expected.

For me this is a work-around since I'm in a tight schedule....

I guess this should not be necessary, maybe the K2-guys will fix this.

Thanks anyway.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Glad you at least got the workaround. K2 is kind of difficult because it was written to give J15 nested categories, and now that's a native function in Joomla. There are bound to be some problems.

It's further complicated because readmore links are also addressed in templates. Trouble shooting this completely would be a matter of trying a different template and also disabling other plugins to see if there is a conflict. In other words, get it working right first, then start adding things and see when it starts to fail. Sounds like you already did this.

I did a K2 install over the weekend to try this out using the Beez20 template and just K2 and wasn't able to replicate the problem in a stripped down installation.

Try the error reporting as Tessa suggested, and let us know if K2 responds. I haven't found any references to this problem elsewhere, so I don't really have an answer yet.
