I am trying to install the plugins and modules that ship with JomSocial and am getting the same (unhelpfully non-descriptive) error message each time: "Failure to transfer file". As instructed, I unzipped the plugin and module files first, and saved the unzipped portions to a new folder. I am using the same procedure I've used to install other components, plugins, etc. (Extension Manager --> Install --> Browse to file --> Upload). Any idea what I'm doing wrong - or what I need to do to correct it?

What Joomla version are you using?

Are you able to install other extensions correctly? If so, give the following tutorial a try and correct your folder and file permissions: www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/admin-too...nd-file-permissions/

Thanks for jumping in, Nick. I'd tried to post a further update with more info but I see it didn't come through.

I'm using Joomla 2.5, and the most recent JomSocial. To test whether it is just an issue with the plugins, I'd also tried installing a Tigra JomSocial template. Same error message, which was actually: "Failed to Move File" and in the box below, "Unable to find install package". Given that they are both related to jomSocial, might this suggest that there's a JS installer that's somehow gone missing?

(and btw, thanks for the link to the permissions tutorial - I've been wondering about that!).

Problem solved - somehow my tmp folder path had been deleted. For anyone else who gets this error, there's a rather full-some string on the Joomla fora addressing the case of the missing install package:

Hi Cheryl,

The most common cause for these errors - "Failed to Move File" and in the box below, "Unable to find install package".

Permissions wrong on tmp folder
Tmp folder doesn't exist or the path to tmp is wrong in global configuration.
Permissions wrong on destination folder.
Uploading the wrong version (for example a 1.5 module to a 2.5 site)
A corrupt download of an installation package giving you a corrupt source.
An error or corruption caused during FTP upload, which means a corrupt installation.

Also check your Extensions manager under database and warnings and see if there are any messages there. First eliminate the usual, then we can look for the unusual.
