When attempting to update J2.5.4 to 2.5.5 (or now 2.5.6) from the admin control panel, it "hangs" on the "Joomla! update in progress" screen & the update is not installed. Any idea on what the issue may be?

Hi Jim,

Have you tried manually upgraded it or are you trying to avoid this method? :-)

I haven't tried the manual method & I also have an option through cpanel/Softaculus. I was just hoping the new "easy" way in J2.5 would work.

Hi Jim,

What is your allowed memory size limit?

Also, are you on local or live? Can you view your error report trying to upgrade?

There may still be some issues with this upgrade that aren't resolved yet. I was looking at the threads in the Joomla forum. There are comments from people as recent as today.

forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=625&t=725515

forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=625&t=725541

you might want to try searching the Joomla forums for the issue and see if no one has mentioned it start a discussion there. It's a topic we're trying to keep with.

Cheers,
Ed

I have noticed that in the public_html directory there is a "tmp" folder & the upgrade packages have been uploaded there when the admin/update now icon was selected. I have also noticed that in extension manager there is a "The PHP temporary directory is not set" warning. Could this be the reason that the updates are not getting installed and it "hangs" on the "Joomla! update in progress" screen? If yes, what would the solution be?

Hi Jim

I tell you what, could you give Admin Tools as try as an option for updating:

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-...ite-protection/14087

That has a slightly better update process and we've a detailed guide in our Security class: www.ostraining.com/courses/class/joomla-25/security/view/
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Hi Jim,

That error doesn't tell you too much except that the installation failed, but it does indicate it is a problem on the server side.

My first guess would be not enough memory, since it seems that the packages are being written to your tmp directory. If the tmp directory needs to have premissions set to 644. Check it but it's probably correct.

Second thing to check is the php memmory allocation. Make sure that your host's PHP memory_limit is at least 16Mb but more is better. We have a tutorial that shows you how to adjust your php.ini file to fix that.

Contact your web host if you have problems with this. They are the ones in control of it.

There could be a space problem on your hosts hard drive. I know they promise unlimited space, but that's not always true. Check your disk utilization and see if you're close to your quota. I've had clients with a lot of undeleted spam in their mailbox that has caused all kinds of problems with this. It's easy enough to check so might as well eliminate it as a problem.

You can also ask your webhost to check the server logs. There should be record of the failure there and it will hopefully give an indication of what went wrong.

Also check the Akeeba forum. There are others who have had this same problem.

Let us know if this helps.

CHeers,
Ed

Problem solved by hosting company - there were incorrect permissions for the administrator/components folder.

Hi Jim,

I'm very glad you got that resolved. Admin tools, as Steve suggested, would have been able to identify this problem with the permissions issue.

It's good to have this out of the way, now you can move on to the next step of your website. :-)

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend, assuming it is Sunday. ;-)
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero
