Hello all!

I'm loving the training course so far.

My question is that I'm just starting the training now (about 4 in on the 1.5 courses) and I naturally figured, let me go with 1.5 first to learn that and then move onto the 2.5 after that... however, I'm getting the feeling that 2.5 is completely different (and newer) than 1.5, and thus there's really no point at all in even taking 1.5. Am I right in this thinking? Or is the 1.5 course still valuable to learn?

I'll be using JomSocial for my site and only really posting / updating content, not changing anything with the design / coding since I have a team for that part.

I look forward to your answer!

Best,

Hi Tyler and welcome to OSTraining! I am glad you decided to join the community here. :-)

You brought up a good question and it really depends on the user. In my opinion I think it is best to go straight for the 2.5 course. If you plan on using J2.5! (Highly suggested), I would only suggest to get familiar with the system you plan on using, otherwise there is really no point on going backwards.

The way I view it, in my opinion, is if you plan on buying an Xbox 360, and wondering if you should learn how to use the Xbox first, before buying the xbox 360, then this should answer it.

However, I'm sure other people will form completely different opinions on this.

And of course, it never hurts to view the 1.5 course anyways, just to see what the differences are from 2.5. ;-)
Warm Regards,

Thanks Tessa!

Very informative response, and I agree 100% with the XBOX quote, I just wasn't sure if this was a parallel to that or not. I see now that it is, and appreciate your input! I'm glad I checked before I got too far in, and got used to a huge bulky controller with buttons you have to face-smash to get to work before I realized every game I'd be playing in 2012 would be with the much newer sleeker model that is far less arduous to play with! ;-) LOL

Best,
Tyler

Hi Tyler,

I'm glad the information was useful and you are very welcome!

I actually started with J1.7, and was in the same situation of wondering if I need to learn J1.5 to understand J1.7. You can definitely do without the old system to your knowledge, but as I mentioned previously, if you have the time, it doesn't hurt to be familiar with the changes that were made. But if you have clients that demand a J!1.5 site because they require the use of a specific extension, such as VirtueMart, that only runs on the old version of Joomla, then you'd definitely have to go that route! :-)

Good luck and can't wait to see your future site. You will have a live site up and running in no time!
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero
