I am trying to upgrade another on of my J1.2.26 sites to J2.5 and keep receiving this error message when trying to install J2.5:

Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.

Any suggestions?

Hi Cheryl,

J1.2 ? You mean J1.5? to J2.5?

And what method are you using for upgrading your site?
Warm Regards,

Tessa,

That was a typo. I mean J1.5-J2.5. I want to use SP Upgrade and the directions suggest installing J2.5 first. Is that not correct?

Hi Cheryl,

Give the following tutorial a try:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/sp-upgrad...-15-to-17-migration/

You should not be trying to install Joomla 2.5 via Joomla 1.5's extension installer. Instead, you should install Joomla 2.5 on your server.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Thanks Nick. Within cPanel, do I just choose the 'Install Joomla!' option?

Hi Cheryl,

It's better to install manually, but you could use the cPanel option if you'd like (I'm not sure what your host provides).

What would the manual process entail: creating a J2.5 folder on my site in cPanel and unzipping the file?

Hi Cheryl,

Yes, that likely would. You'd have to make the change afterward in the configuration.php file of your old site for the DB user and passowrd. The following documentation should be of help:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/guided-to...nfigurationphp-file/

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi Nick,

That was in fact my issue...whew!

I am now moving forward with the SP Upgrade. My only question is, when entering the db info, am I entering in my J1.5 info or the info I created for the new db? The instructions in the tutorial weren't clear to me.

Thanks.

Step 1 is finding the info for your 1.5 site, which you'll then enter in step 4. I think that's what you're asking, correct?

Correct. Thanks.

Also, per the tutorial, Rod said that none of the options on the pre-installation check page should be red. I noticed however that I have the following sections that are red. How important is this?

Display Errors Off On (RED)
Magic Quotes GPC Off On (RED)

The display errors shouldn't affect anything, but the Magic Quotes GPC should probably be turned off. You can ask your host to allow you to override it through a php.ini file.

No they didn't. They just told me to create a file in text editor and save it as php.ini.

This was all of the info that I was given, but it doesn't seem to really apply to my issue: my.rochen.com/knowledgebase.php?action=d...rticle&catid=2&id=10

The warnings are not appearing. This is referring to the settings on my J2.5 pre-installation page. Please see below for my previous post issue.

I even cleared my browser's cache..still no change. How big of an issue is this?

Hi Cheryl,

Sorry, I think I misunderstood something? Are you still installing the 2.5 site? If so, it should say that Magic Quotes GPC Off On (RED) is recommended not required. If that's the case, it's not a big issue. It's only a big issue if it says it's required. However, if you're just installing 2.5 as it appears you are, then it should just be recommended and not required.

Kind regards,
Nick

Magic Quotes is a process that automagically escapes incoming data to the PHP script. It's preferred to code with magic quotes off and to instead escape the data at runtime, as needed.

The feature has been deprecated in php 5.3 and completely removed from 5.4. So if everything seems to work, I don't think this is a serious problem.

Nick has had experience with Rochen and the php.ini, but most of the time if you don't have access to the servers php.ini file, you can put your own in the public_html file. Nick says this won't work on Rochen servers, but I would try it anyway since it's the most common method for fixing it.

On the other hand, you might not need to fix it at all.

Cheers,
Ed

I just received this error message when trying to install SP Upgrade:

I've updated the db info, but still nothing. Have you seen this happen before? How can I correct it? I'm supposed to be entering the J1.5 db info, correct?

Hi Cheryl,

Were you trying to install SP upgrade or trying to run the upgrade?

Did you first create a working J2.5 site without any sample data? And were you able to access the admin?

Let's find out first that we have a working installation. Then check the permissions on the tmp file - should be 755 - then the configuration.php file -should be 644 - and make sure the db connection information is correct in the configurtion.php file.

If that's all correct upload SP Upgrade and let us know if it installs correctly.

Also SP UPgrade gives great support if you purchased a license. Don't hesitate to contact them. They are in Europe, so there's a time difference, but they are very good at responding and helping.

Let us know if you got it installed, then let's go through the upgrade procedure.

Cheers,
Ed

Ed,

In the J2.5 installation process, was I supposed to enter my new db's info or the J1.5 one?

To answer your question, I am having this problem while trying to run SP Upgrade.

when you installed 2.5 it should have had a new data base with no data in it. You should not have entered the old database information. The two data bases should be completely separate. If you entered the old db info during install you may have corrupted your data. I hope there's a backup.

Here are the steps.

1. Completely new Joomla installation with it's own database, and no sample data.
2. Install SP Upgrade on the new site.
3. Enter your old database connection into SP UPgrade so it knows where to get the data.
After install run discover and update on the new site to refresh and update all your plugins and modules. Manually upload any that didn't transfer.

You enter the old database information in SP Upgrade and it will get the info and transfer it to the new, empty data base.

That's why I asked if you had a new installation. If it's messed up, You can also just try to do a new install using your instant install feature for J25 into another subdirectory and abandon this one if it's too confusing.

Then go through the steps.

ed

It won't work that way. There are some new tables in the new version and some old tables were renamed. Also some that were dropped completely. SP upgrade renames the tables and moves things from the deleted tables to the proper ones.

It's possible to do this manually but you would need to be an expert at databases. SP Upgraded does all this for you. If it were easy, you wouldn't need a program to do it ;)

Ed

Ed,

Things seem ok so far, except for this line on the SP Upgrade transfer page:

'Source Path' in options is not accessible.
Remeber that you cannot use this function during remote migration.

Does this mean the info I entered for that is wrong?

I'm not sure what this means. It sounds like maybe you have the wrong path entered for the source and it thinks you're going to another computer instead of a directory on your server.

Have you looked at the SP Upgrade documentation? They just upgraded it and I haven't had a chance to go through the process with the new version. See if you can find an example of the correct path in the documentation.
