Yes, absolutely. There are some very relevant examples for you in the work of nuevvo.gr/

They've built sites like reporter.gr/ in Joomla by using the K2 extension.

A note of caution ... building a site like ttp://reporter.gr/ or cretalive.gr takes a lot of skill, but it can be done in Joomla.
