ImageSlideShow taken off the JED 1 year 3 weeks ago #44902

Hi,
I have a site that is built completely around the IMageSlideShow module.
www.santafeinteriordesign.net

My client is showing up in a few minutes to get a training session on her site. I was just about to update from joomla 1.7 to 2.5.4 when I though I should first look at the ImageSlideShow Module site to see if it will upgrade well. It's been taken off the JED because (see this page extensions.joomla.org/extensions/4348/details):
This extension has been unpublished for the following reason:

UR12-General Guideline Violation (See Notes)

Unpublished Comments From Editors
Various links on the dev site point to malware.

Oh GOSH.

Can you recommend another slideshow module that works like this one? Maybe I can just use all the images and folders as they are and replace the modules.

Oh dang. She's pulling in the driveway.

LIFE!
Hope Kiah, Santa Fe Web Design

Hi Hope,

I'm not sure what it looks like (it's a very generic name so it's hard to find), but it should definitely work if you upgrade to 2.5.4

Hope the meeting goes well with your client! :)

Kind regards,
Nick

It's just been unpublished from the JED, it doesn't mean it's gone completely or gone for good. If it's working on your site now I'd keep using it and show it to your client rather than try to rush to get another one.

You might be able to find the company website by looking at the actual module's php files. They probably identify themselves there and you can see if they are still around and if there is something they can do.

Thank you!

But what about
Unpublished Comments From Editors
Various links on the dev site point to malware.

Do you think I'm risking a hack if I leave this module running?

thanks,
Hope

That refers to the company's website. I believe someone detected or reported a problem with the website not the extension, so that's why JED took it down.

If you can find out the original company or website, we might be able to tell more. There's no way to verify what's happening if we don't know who it is. Steve might know more about this. I'll ask him as well.

If you're on Hostgator, they will run a malware scan on your site if you ask them and it will detect it. You might check with your host and see what they can do.

FYI. Looks like you are using briaskISS as the slide show module. Their website is completely down right now. I don't know when that happened or how long it's been.

If you want to check out other slide show plugins

Thanks Ed.
I have spoken to Bluehost about the cool service that Hostgator offers, but Bluehost doesn't offer malware scanning.

The web address for the module is briask.com and it's definitely down. I found the developer's email address in the module's xml file (great idea, Ed) and I have emailed the developer. The address is tied to the domain name, but it hasn't bounced back yet, so I'm hopeful to hear back.

I may look at your slideshow suggestions above if I don't hear back, but for now I'll take my chances.

I ran a system check with RSFirewall on the site and it didn't see any malware patterns.

I upgraded to Joomla 2.5.4 and everything is working.

Crossing my fingers!
thanks again!

Hi Hope,

I think it will work out. I think it just seems scarier than it is.

Hi Ed,
Thank you for the reassurance.

It's always scary taking responsibility for my clients' site security. I work with freelancers on tight budgets as a rule, so many can't pay me for monthly security scrubs and backup maintenance.

I think I'll set up a dropbox account for this client and automated backups using Akeeba and a CRON job on bluehost.

Question: in general, would you say that modules are less potentially risky than plugins? Intuitively, I would think so, but I could be wrong.

Hi Hope,

Both have practically the same level of risk. Anything that is installed on the site puts your site at risk (although just in a minor way).

Kind regards,
Nick

Good news from the developer, Briask:
The module is safe, pretty much all it comprises of is some Javascript hooked into the Joomla module system.
That's a relief!
I don't know what changes Joomla has introduced in 2.5.x but it is highly likely that the 1.7.x ImageSlideShow will not work in 2.5.x . It should not be difficult for it to be upgraded to 2.5.x, you have all the code in the php&javascript files in the module download.

Well, it's working so far!
There are no updates available for the module.

Anyway, I wanted you to hear the outcome of this inquiry.
