Hi every1,
I have a site which is directory for a health condition.
I need to list specialists on a physician finder.
Most of the extensions I've found are commercial.
Is there a good free one; or, if I must pay, does anyone have any ideas about what extension might be the best?
There seems to be a few. I can't choose.
I don't want to pick one, and find a better one later.

Hi Scott,

I saw 2 decent store locator extensions.

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/maps-a-...her/geotagging/11955

and

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/vertica...atic-directory/11360

Have you taken a look at these already from the JED?
Warm Regards,

Hey Tessa,
Yeah I saw them but wasn't particularly impressed.
I don't really like the whole iframe look with these 2, everything seems so squashed in.
I found this one as well, its got facebook and twitter links area + details popup. JoomlavidaThey're all around $50, the price is - well bearable I guess but I just want to make sure I get the best one.
I'll be seriously cheesed off if I wack-up the $50 then find a better one.
You'll notice on this demo the slider bar (just like down the edge of any webpage) inside the website when the amount of listings exceeds the size of the map in height. Can css tidy this slide bar up from its standard color styling?

Hi Scott,

Even if you don't like the way an extension looks, you can always change the way everything looks with a little bit of CSS work. You have to remember that everything you see in the front end is designed with CSS code.

And as for extensions that cost money, sometimes it's best to fork out the few bucks and help support their business to improve and implement newer and better things for the extension. And if you end up finding a better extension, you are in a win win situation, right? You find the extension you wanted and you also helped support the other extension too. ;-)

Good luck and let me know how it works out for you. :-)
Warm Regards,

Hey Tessa,
I'm not sure you're right on this one about fixing everything with css.
The first 2 extensions you mentioned seem to be set up like iframes with all the info squashed into the main body area. I'm not sure I can do much with that.
The extension I looked at does have some styling added, but it LOOKS (I'm not 100% sure) as though it might be displaying a map in the mainbody area and the information in a left sidebar area. It looks a lot tidier + it has the added bonus of facebook and twitter icon links + information pop-up.
So unless anyone comes up with anything better I think I'm leaning towards the JoomlaVida JLocate extension at the moment. I won't be able to buy it till monday so i have a little time to see if anyone has any other ideas.

Hi Scott

I'm not sure you'll find a great free option here, I'm afraid.

JReviews is pretty powerful directory option: www.reviewsforjoomla.com/. The downside is it will add up to about $220 if you get the Geomaps add on too.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to find a decent extension in this category at all.
I almost purchased JLocate by joomlavida.com but I'm glad now that I didn't.
For 1 - Its not listed on the JED
For 2 - It doesn't say whether or not it's compatible for J25
For 3 - Other users on the support forum there have reported some issues, but support is completely non-existant and it looks very much as though if you have issues, you don't get any help whatsoever.

Thanks for showing me JReviews Steve, it could be useful for something but I'm not sure that it's exactly what I want for the purpose I need right now.

It seems as though the 2 extensions Tessa mentioned might be the only choices in this category, so I decided to go with the first one, Store Locator.

Hi Scott,

Have you seen a site with a store locator that works the way you want? Send us a link if you have.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,
I think I picked the right one.
This one Store Locator is not so bad ->
Here
I am able to change the look with css like Tessa said, and it has Facebook and Twitter icons.
(I've also got that $50 part payment for you if you're willing to look at my other sites issues.)

Now down to css.
I've got a heap of changes to make, and I would really appreciate if someone can assist me. I'm even willing to pay someone for their time if necessary. Sometimes my changes work sometimes they don't.
I'll have to focus on improving my css this week.
My Store Locator Page

You can easily see whats wrong if you click the link.
The first thing I want to do is increase the size of the main div that holds the map and info. (- for the purpose of increasing the size of the left column)
If I firebug the main div that says 'Search to locate places near you' I get this: element.style {width: 701px;}
What I want is it to be around 900px.
Now what does element.style mean?
Does this mean that there was no class named in the markup so I can't target it to change it in my custom.css?
I'd probably have more success if I was changeing the original css, but I'm trying to teach myself to make all my changes on custom.css in order to make sure my changes don't revert with template and extension updates.
I have about a dozen changes to make here and I could really use some help.
(I've done the OST css course but not the stylemaster course)

Hi Scott,

We're glad you found what you were looking for!

Element.style in Firebug means that's hard coded and not in the CSS. Literally, it's saying that the style of the element is a width of 701 pixels.

You can still target it from the div id, which it seems you've already tried to do with the following code:
#sl_results_container {
    width: 908px;
}

Now all you have to do is add the !important to give it precedence and you're set:
#sl_results_container {
    width: 908px !important;
}

If you need any other help, could you open up a new forum topic please? This one is getting cluttered. Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I did try exactly that already (the top one - but it didn't work) ...but not with the !important; rule.
Yes it worked, Excellent - Many Thanks -
I wondered what was going wrong.
This has happened to me a few times before and I get confused and not know what I'm doing wrong.
You'll have to direct me to somewhere that explains this stuff for me please.
I'll play around with it and move any more questions to a new forum.
Thankyou to everyone for your help.

Hi Scott,

You're welcome! I'm glad it worked for you! :)

Here's the Geeky explanation:

Here's a simple explanation:
