TOPIC: How to use RSS Feed in Joomla 2.5

How to use RSS Feed in Joomla 2.5 1 year 9 months ago #50491

Hello,

I have recently migrated from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.5. With J1.5 I used an external plugin RSS Content to pull in the information onto my site. I need to have the ability to pull in RSS feeds automatically into my J2.5 site (e.g. from AllAfrica.com to my website www.ghanaoracle.com/test). Does 2.5 have a built in extension for this or do I have to use an external one? Is there a J2.5 version for RSS Content?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Many thanks,

Joyce

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have had a quick look and can't see which link is specifically for RSS Feed. Can you tell me which one it is?

Thanks.

Hi
You get you link from allafrica here allafrica.com/misc/tools/rss.html?feed=latest
You paste it in the News Feed Manager (video 2 mins 10 secs) Then set up a menu for your feed.
May be I have misunderstood your question - This will load the feed into the main content area of a page on your site.
Regards
Mark

Hi,

Thanks for this. I think the reason I couldn't see the link originally was because I was using my mobile.

I have watched the video and understand how to create a menu for my feed.

Is it possible to use News Feed Manager to grab content automatically under a schedule which would then be under my control?

Kind regards,

Joyce.

Hi Joyce,

You would need something more sophisticated for that kind of scheduling. There are newsfeed plugins that will allow you to do that.

extensions.joomla.org/search?q=newsfeed

This is a popular one: extensions.joomla.org/search?q=feedgator

How to use RSS Feed in Joomla 2.5 1 year 9 months ago #50608

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your reply.

I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

I used RSS2Content on my Joomla 1.5 site to automatically obtain news feeds.
I understand that Feedgator is a popular component for obtaing news feeds. My qiestions are:

1). Does RSS2Content have a version for Joomla 2.5?
2). Am I able to set up a cron job to automatically schedule rss feeds to my Joomla 2.5 site using Feedgator?
3). If I am using Feedgator and I use multiple RSS feeds (e.g. to pull Sports and African News) will I able able to ensure consistent styling on my Joomla 2.5 site as a result of obtaining multiple news feeds?

Many thanks.

Joyce.

Hi Joyce,

RSS2content doesn't have a2.5 version as far as I know. You could try asking them if they plan to update it.

The only way to find out if Feedgator is going to work is try it. There are so many variables with different templates and I don't know how it will react with every one. You should set up a test site and see what happens.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your response.

I have a test site and will try Feedgator.

Do you have contact details for RSS2Content?

Joyce.

How to use RSS Feed in Joomla 2.5 1 year 8 months ago #53574

Hello,

I have managed to installed Feedgator onto my J.2.5 website and manually imported an RSS feed from the site AllAfrica.com.

How can I show the AllAfrica.com's favicon for the RSS feeds that I import from AllAfrica.com? As apart from the Author name, I would like to use the visual icon to let the users know whether the articles came from.

Many thanks,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

Congrats on getting it to work! :)

As to the favicon, sorry, but that's not a feature of FeedGator, therefore it's not possible without modifying the extension code.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks for getting back to me. It's a shame that Feedgator doesn't show the feed favicon. I would like the look and feel of my site to have as many visuals as possible. Therefore, displaying the feed favicon would be beneficial.

Can you recommend any extensions that will:

* Show the feed favicon when rss feeds are imported.
* Allow the automatic collection of rss feed content items at a specified time.
* Permit multiple rss feeds and the ability to enable consistent styles across the different rss feeds,

Many thanks.

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome!

As to the favicon, sorry, but that's not a feature of FeedGator, therefore it's not possible without modifying the extension code.

Sorry, I don't know of any with all those features. You can see a list of what's available in the JED Automatic Articles category:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/social-...n/automatic-articles

Additionally, you could hire FeedGator's developer to implement that feature into FeedGator.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Many thanks,

Hi Joyce,

Oh, I meant Feedgator's actual developer (i.e. the one who created the extension), Matthew Faulds. I'm glad you like the idea though! :)

Try posting at his forum to see if you can contact him privately about it:

Hello,

I posted Matthew Faulds a message through his forum a couple of days ago and I am still waiting to hear back from him.
Q1. Have you managed to make contact with him?

I was wondering if you could help me with another aspect of Feedgator...
I think that I have ticked all the correct boxes. However, I have noticed that only a summary text (text intro) of an article is imported.

Q2. How can I ensure that the full text imported?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Many thanks,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

One quick caveat before we start, please check out our Support FAQ on the Support Times and Days: www.ostraining.com/support-faq/

That being said:
1) No, sorry, I do not know him :)
2) Go to FeedGator's options >> Text Handling tab >> try the "Get Feed Full Text" and "Get Source Full Text" options.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

How to use RSS Feed in Joomla 2.5 1 year 8 months ago #53858

Hi Nick,

Thank you for the reminder with regards to your Support Times and Days - I guess that I have been spoilt with the excellent support and service that you provide that I forgot about the Ts & Cs.

I tried setting the options you mentioned after having already importing the articles and of courser it didn't work. However, I have just imported a new set of articles and it has worked.

One other question....

I am still testing how I will be importing my feeds and so I have a list of feeds. Once I go live, if I wish to delete the feeds and the articles that I imported do I simply delete the feed and articles or do I have to do anything with the Joomla database?

Many thanks.

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome! No problem! Monday just takes us a little longer to get caught up because of the weekend :)

Great! I'm glad it worked for you! :)

You should be able to simply delete the feeds and articles. That should be enough.

Kind regards,
Nick
