I can not single space poem stanzas in the word editor. The "paragraph" format puts in a double space with use of the enter key. The "preformatted" format gives on a grey box. The "address" format gives one italics that can't be changed.

Are you using the JCE editor?
If so go to Components>> JCE>>Control Panel>>Editor Global Configurations.
Under Formatting and Display Where it say "Enter Key..." Change from paragraph to Line Break.
See if that works for you.

I am using a JCE editor. Under components I have "Banner..Contacts..Joomla updates...Messaging...newsfeeds...redirect...Search...Smart Search...and Weblinks. I am sorry, but I can find no "Control Panel." Please help again!

Are you signed in as a "Super User" or just an "Administrator"?
You will need to be a super user to access the control panel.

Ah...thank you. Found it when I uploaded the newer JCE.

Back, again. I followed the instructions, changed Enter Key to line break, and also said to reset the editor styling. All to no avail. I still get a double space when I hit the enter button. For what it is worth, the Style button still displays paragraph, various headings, address and nothing new.

Try holding shift and then clicking enter. That should produce a single spaced line for you.
