TOPIC: Having a JomSocial Login and Join Us Link outside of the Community module

Having a JomSocial Login and Join Us Link outside of the Community module 1 year 1 week ago #45693

Hello,

I have installed JomSocial on the test environment of my website (www.ghanaoracle.com/test). I asked JomSocial to help with setting up a link that points to JomSocial registration and that has been set up (although I don't know how) as a link cakked REGISTER. See the 1st file attachement. If I wanted to change the title of this link to from REGISTER to JOIN US, how do I do that?

I would also like to have a 2nd link for the Login (to be called SIGN IN) next to the REGISTER link. Could you advise me as to how I can create this 2nd link?

So, if the two links were read the left to right, it would be JOIN US followed by SIGN IN.

Many thanks.

Joyce

To change the labels and messages in Joomla you can can use a new feature of 2.5, Language Overrides.

This tutorial will show you how it works.

Hello Ed,

Thank you for sending the tutorial. I have tried the tutorial and followed steps 1, 2 and 3, get to the search form for the "Site" view. I typed in the search phrase "Register", clicked on Search and results were displayed.

I don't understand what the problem is.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

With thanks and kind regards,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

Did you go through the rest of the steps? Once you find the strings that make the word REGISTER appear, you have to create the overrides. It's not clear if you tried this and it didn't work or you didn't get through the rest of the process.

Hi Ed,

No, I didn't do the rest of the steps. There was an error which is in the attached file. Should I create the override with the constant value indicated even though there was an error?

I have a jomsocial site and I get a similar error. I can't make the changes on my site when I get that error. I have no problem on a site without jomsocial. I think you should contact JomSocial tech support and share this screenshot with them.

Even after I uninstall JomSocial I still get an error message that points to a file that comes from azrul (the company that makes JomSocial.)

You might be able to solve it with a template override, but this looks like a bug they should fix.

I'll search the forums and see if anyone else is having a similar problem and let you know. In the meantime, see what Azrul can do.

Hello Ed,

I contacted Azrul / JomSocial about the language override issue and the said that it's a Joomla problem.

Please find attached a screen shot of my attempts to use the language override in the backend of my site.

Did you search the forums? Was anyone else is having a similar problem?

Many thanks.

Hi Joyce,

Interesting. When I try that on my JomSocial sites I get a similar error, but it specifically mentions a file that originates from azrul.com which is where JomSocial comes from. Yours indicates it's having trouble with the jomsocial language file.

It doesn't happen on sites without JomSocial. So there is something happening between jomsocial and joomla. I guess you could say joomla has bug because it doesn't work with jomsocial, or you could say jomsocial has a bug because it doesn't work right with joomla. Either way it's a real pain. I think jomsocial techsupport was just looking for a way to make the problem go away.

I haven't seen any other mentions of this problem on the web so far, but I'll look some more and let you know what I find.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your response. I hope you are able to find some information in the forums.

I guess I know what the answer to my first question is already, however, I'll ask it anyway..

1). Have any of the others at the OS Training support team experienced this problem? If so, do they have a work around for it?

2). Are you using JomSocial on a live website? I am coming to the end of my trial period and although I like the product, I am wondering how much it's in use and whether there are other bugs that I will discover at a later date?

MAny thanks.

Joyce.

Hi Joyce,

What Joomla version are you using? What Jomsocial version are you using?

1) You can work around it by using the following manual technique:
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/translati...-language-overrides/

2) Yes, I use it on another site and have worked on several sites where the clients have used it. It's very in-use and fantastic software overall. Although, as you've discovered, it can be buggy at times. Their support is not very responsive and, unfortunately, not helpful at times (at least when I used them). However, I've heard that lately they've improved their support tremendously.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Nick

Thanks Joyce!

Please update to the latest 2.5.4. Let me know if you have any questions as to how to update.

To find the Jomsocial version, go to Extensions >> Extension Manager >> Manage >> search for Jomscial >> look in the "Version" column.

Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks. I have JomSocial ver 2.6.0

I agree about the support at JomSocial - I am still finding them very unhelpful.

I will try to upgrade to Joomla 2.5.4 now and let you know if I have any issues shortly.

You're welcome, Joyce!

Afterward, please update to the latest 2.6.1 for Jomsocial. Hopefully there's a bug fix in there for it.

Please make a backup before updating.

Nick

Hi Nick,

I have go to my site control panel, clicked on Joomla core update, then clicked on upgrate to 2.5.4. Then I got the following errors (see attached file). So, I clicked on Joomla_2.5.3-Stable-Full_Package.zip and saved the zip file. Do I now go to extensions and install from there or what do I do next?

Having a JomSocial Login and Join Us Link outside of the Community module 11 months 3 weeks ago #47174

Hi NIck,

I am currently on a chat discussion with my host - Webhosting UK.

My disk allocation is: 1024 MB. The cache folder is using 725 MB and t3 folder 723 MB.

I cannot do an Akeeba backup and I think it's because my disk if full.

Cache directory is: /home/ghanaora/public_html/cache

T3 directory is: /home/ghanaora/public_html/cache/t3

My Joomla 1.5 site is on www.ghanaoracle.com
My test Joomla 2.5 site is on www.ghanaoracle.com/test

Is it safe to delete the cache and T3 directories? I have someone waiting on chat and would be grateful if someone could get back to me ASAP.

Many thanks.

Joyce/

Probably safe to delete the cache and anything in the tmp folder without a worry.

I don't know what's in the T3 directory. You might want to download it via FTP and save a backup that way. Then delete it.

Downloading your entire Joomla directory may take a lot of time, but it's a way of making a backup that works.

If you have a download of the the Joomla directory and a copy of your data base you have a complete backup and don't really need Akeeba.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

When you say download the the Joomla directory and a copy of your data base, do you mean copy my /home/ghanaora/public_html/test directory? How do I take a copy of the database?

Many thanks.

Hi Joyce,

Yes, he means the test directory. You can export a copy of your database using your host's phpMyAdmin. Give the following tutorial a try:
ostraining.com/howtojoomla/2006092518/ho...base-with-phpmyadmin

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.
