Okay - For another site I'm working on, I installed Joomla from within the web host as a web app. Instead of through FTP.

A long the way, Joomla uninstalled itself (before a backup had been made on my end) and so the web host had to install a backup. BUT, things have gotten really screwed up. They finally got it working so I can login now - but I'm having issues being able to install any extensions.

I use the "fix permissions" tool in admin tools. BUT...that doesn't help anything.

When I try to install something...I see down in the left hand corner of the browser that the % goes up... so, it gets all the way up to 90-some% uploaded...and then it goes to a page that says "-1 - An error has occurred. Copy failed".

I've tried installing several different things...and the same thing happens with each one...

Any thoughts?

Anita

Hi Anita,

What Joomla version are you using? I'm going to have you reinstall the latest version (just the core), but I need to know first what version you're using.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Anita,

OK, please download the following file and unzip it into your Joomla root or FTP the contents to your Joomla root:
joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/17...le-Patch_Package.zip

That will upgrade your site to 2.5.6 and also reset many of your core files.

Kind regards,
Nick

Okay - got that done. And it shows that it's now version 2.5.6.

BUT, I'm still having issues.

I was able to install a plugin just fine.

But, if I go to manage extensions...it shows that akeeba backup and admin tools is installed...but they're not showing up under the components pull down menu... And when I try to re-install - I get this error:

Copy failed
JInstaller: :Install: Failed to copy file /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/tmp/install_4fe49f9c87216/frontend/admintools.php to /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/components/com_admintools/admintools.php

and a similar one for akeeba backup...
Blessings,
~Anita

Also I tried to re-install aceshop because there's a few issues with that... and I'm getting the "-1 - An error has occurred. Copy failed" error that I was getting before...

Hi Anita,

OK, let's try resetting all the core files this time. Please download the following file and unzip it into your Joomla root or FTP the contents to your Joomla root:
joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/17...e-Update_Package.zip

If that doesn't fix things, then there's a database issue and we'll go from there. Let me know what the results are.

Nick

Hi Anita,

hmm, FTP programs generally shouldn't ever time-out during transfers. Try FTPing just those directories and files.

Hi Anita,

No good as in they won't FTP or no good as in they FTP'ed and you're still getting the error?

Well, I meant they didn't FTP. But I tried again and finally got them to do it.

However, still getting error installing extensions. Just tried admin tools and got:

Copy failed
JInstaller: :Install: Failed to copy file /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/tmp/install_4fe4dc4de3f9f/frontend/admintools.php to /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/components/com_admintools/admintools.php

Hi Anita,

OK, make a backup of your site. Then please see the attached "component.zip". Unzip it and you'll see component.php. Take it and replace (make a back of the below file first though):
libraries/joomla/installer/adapters/component.php

Afterward, try installing your extensions and see if it works for you :)

The file contains a bug fix for installing extensions. Hopefully it will work for you.

Kind regards,
Nick

That didn't help...

:(

Here's a question... Can I just start over with a brand new installation with Joomla - in a sub folder to start out. Then attach it to the database...and upload my template? Would that fix things? And then when I see if it works...then just move it all to the main directory?

Hi Anita,

Yes, start over. That is exactly what I would do. There have been so many changes to the original, you may never track it down.

One of the advantages of doing that is you can do things step by step and if something breaks you will know what lead up to it.

Cheers,
Ed

"Component Install: DB function reports no errors"

Any ideas?

Hi Heart0,

Is this happening to ALL extensions? After you get the failed install, does it still show up in your menu, but going to a 404 page? Or does it not show at all?

Yes, it does it with every extension.

And now when I try to login the ADMIN Section - I get this:

Warning: require_once(/usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/TEST/components/com_aceshop/aceshop/aceshop.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/TEST/plugins/user/aceshop/aceshop.php on line 18 Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/TEST/components/com_aceshop/aceshop/aceshop.php' (include_path='.:/usr/libexec/php4-cgi/share/pear') in /usr/local/pem/vhosts/109388/webspace/siteapps/24905/htdocs/TEST/plugins/user/aceshop/aceshop.php on line 18

Several reasons for that extension. Mostly they have to do with complex components that failed to install correctly, or from trying to install the wrong version of a component. It's not limited to that, but that's the first place to look, espcially since it doesn't seem to like aceshop.

When you say you started over, did you do a new installation and install the modules one at time and watch for errors?

Did you do build up the site before you tried to connect to the old database?

Are you trying to do a reinstall in the same directory that had a previous installation?

To find all the answers, you could try to do what I would do when faced with an unknown or new problem. Paste the error message into a google search and see if someone else has the problem and how they solved it.
www.google.com/search?sugexp=chrome,mod=...on+reports+no+errors

You might see something that gives us a clue to your situation.

Cheers,
Ed

Happy Saturday Ed :)

Well, it first started with qlue404 when I installed it... And then it somehow kinda started working again...where it let me in...but getting errors when trying to install things. And then after installing aceshop, I got it again...

YES...when I started fresh, I did a fresh install in a new directory /TEST/. But I did attach it to the same database. Should I start over with a new database? But then how do I import the articles and aceshop products from the old database to the new one?

Hi Heart,

I'm hoping we can work through this systematically so you can spot where the trouble starts. When you installed the test site, before you attached the data base to it, did it work? It would be better to leave the existing data out of the test site until you have everything working with no error messages.

Trouble shooting is a process of elimination. You have to verify that each new upload is acting properly before you add the next one. As soon as you run into a problem you need to fix it before you add more things that confuse the issue.
Well, it first started with qlue404 when I installed it.
Try leaving that out or disabling it. Sounds like it's causing a problem. Or possibly whatever you installed right before that caused the problem and it conflicts with qlue404.

In one of your error messages you got
failed to open stream: No such file or directory in
That would mean the file that's required is either not there or it has the wrong permissions. So there are files missing (or at least unreadable) from ace shop.

You need to isolate that problem. You may need to fix permissions, or you need a new download or patch from ace shop to get the missing files. Seems qlue404 and aces shop don't like each other at this point.

Disable everything but the core plugins on the test site. Turn them on one at at time in order of importance. Let us know when you get the first error message. Try it with a clean database. We'll tell you how to import the data when you get to that step.

Ec

Okay - I did just created another sub directory and did a test installation - new database and everything and I'm still running into issues. I'm starting to think it's the web host and the permissions issues that I keep running into that's causing this. SO...we're switching to godaddy... I've never had issues with Joomla there.

So, can you go ahead and let me know how to import everything from the old database to the new one that I'll create at godaddy? That would be awesome - thank you so much! I'd like to go ahead and get that info...because I just want to sit down and get it all done at once :)

Thank you so much for all of your help!!!

Just use phpMyAdmin to export the data base.
Then use phpMyadmin to import it on the new site after you have the new site working.

Also I would suggest you try Hostgator before GoDaddy. You will usually get more help from Hostgator and their servers are perfect for Joomla. Plus they have a php.ini editor in the cPanel if you run into problems. With GoDaddy, you don't have any access to php.ini and it's more trouble if you have to deal with it.

I have been using hostgator for years without a problem. But it's up to you. The best one to use is the one you know how to use!

Cheers,
Ed

Hey Ed :)

Okay - so I've moved everything over to GoDaddy. i exported the database from the old host and then imported into godaddy.

Most things are working smoothly...except for a couple of things...

I'm using Chronoforms for the contact form. When I connected the site to teh database - it showed chronoforms in the components menu but when I click on it, it takes me to that page that says it doesn't exists. But when I go to "manage" extensions... it shows that the component, plugin, and module exist. So, I try to uninstall them...and just start fresh... and I get this:

JFolder: :files: Path is not a folder. Path: /home/content/32/9565632/html/administrator/components/com_chronoforms
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file
JFolder: :files: Path is not a folder. Path: /home/content/32/9565632/html/administrator/components/com_chronoforms
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file
JFolder: :delete: Path is not a folder. Path: /home/content/32/9565632/html/administrator/components/com_chronoforms
JFolder: :delete: Path is not a folder. Path: /home/content/32/9565632/html/components/com_chronoforms
Component Uninstall: Can't uninstall. Please remove manually

So, when I FTP in...and try to find anything dealing with "Chronoforms" so that I can delete it manually, I can't find anything.

I even deleted the chronoforms fields out of the database. (I exported the contact form from the old host so that I have it and can just import it when I get this working right.)

But when I try to just re-install Chronoforms...hoping that it will just write over whatever's happening... I get this:

Applied '0' Database updates successfully.
Error installing component
Component Install: DB function reports no errors

So, I'm at a loss. LOL.

Anita

Hi Anita,

When you are viewing in phpMyAdmin, did you see anything in prefix_extensions that says com_chronoforms?

Also, did you try to click on fix under extensions manager > database?

WOOHOO :) Yes... not only in prefix_extensions but also in a few other fields, there were still chronoforms items. I just had deleted the actual prefix_chronoforms fields - I didn't know I had to search for content within other fields :) I just learned something new. WOOHOO.

Now, that I deleted it all... I was able to install it again successfully and everything is working great :)
