TOPIC: Google Maps Api and version Questions

Google Maps Api and version Questions 10 months 1 week ago #51003

Hi all

Where on web can I find my original API key that I associated to my domain? I did this for original 1.5 site a few years ago. Where is my account with my original API?? I have a generic google id and password but do not recall if I used it to sign up for this original API and have tried for hours to find the location [site] of where my domain is registered with this original API to see if I registered the entire domain or only specific pages. I keep running into pages for 'Google Maps API for Business' which I think is a paid service and my user id is not recognized there. I did not sign up for any paid service when I got my original API, and I can not find another location for finding my API account. Only links I seem to find are for creating new APIs. Any idea how I can find where my original API is at google?

Background & Problem

I installed a new plugin [plugin_googlemap2] on my 2.5 site. Plugin version is 2.16 with support for both API v2 and v3 - you can choose whether to run "api version" 2 or 3 in plugin manager. I left it as version 3 and I copied my API from the 1.5 site over but then map starts to show but gets cut off with error message.
Google has disabled use of the Maps API for this application. The provided key is not a valid Google API Key, or it is not authorized for the Google Maps Javascript API v3 on this site. If you are the owner of this application, you can learn about obtaining a valid key here: developers.google.com/maps/documentation...torial#Obtaining_Key

I changed setting in plugin from 3.x to 2.x and now map is working fine. I would like to know why my original API won't work with v3 and where to find this original API on the web [possibly lost user ID]

To add to confusion, I read that api's are no longer necessary for the new version 3... so what should I be doing with 2.5 site? v2 or v3? API or no API?

Oh, and what is this about having to now pay for google map clicks??

Thanks
scott

Hi Scott,

If you forgot your google API map key, then you are not able to just find where the key is, you request it again for the same domain name and your key that is generated will be the same.

code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html

Also, for different questions, could you post in a new thread to make it easy for us to answer? :-) Thank you. :P

Google Maps Api and version Questions 10 months 1 week ago #51008

Hi Tessa, Thanks for the link, but I have already been to that page. That is where I originally got my key. I am looking for the site where I can access controls for this existing key which is being used on my site.

I haven't forgotten my original API Key. I have it. I don't recall how I got it originally - if I was required to use a user ID and Password to get the original key and the website where I can go to revisit this key. I have read that you can change where this Key will be accepted by either adding more urls, or restricting the key to only specific subdomains or even single web pages. This is what I would like to find - access my controls for this original API key.... and if by chance, I used a completely different user ID which I can no longer remember, how to contact Google to access the account again.
Also, for different questions, could you post in a new thread to make it easy for us to answer? :-) Thank you. :P
Tessa, by this do you mean different than those of original post? Or are you saying that I am putting to many questions into one post? I try to keep related questions together but I can change this if necessary - only one per post if you all prefer.

In my original post I basically asked 3 questions (albeit a bit wordy as usual)
  • Where can I find my existing api key on web (not sign up for new)
  • OST's recommendation on using v3 (NO API KEY?) or stay with v2 (with API)?
  • Comment on Google now charging for this - is this new?

Thanks
Scott

Hi Scott,

Have you looked at the API FAQ
developers.google.com/maps/faq

The API is still free, but they do have a business version you can upgrade to.
developers.google.com/maps/licensing

The paid service is relatively new. They have added a lot of products and now you can buy extended services. You don't need to, though.

I think when you try to register for a new key, if you sign in with the same account you used for the original you will see a list of your keys. You'll have to explore your Google account. Using webmaster tools and other Google services isn't our specialty. We're pretty focused on what relates to our lessons.

Hi Ed checking out faqs thanks
I can find no reference to the original API key using my one and only google account. I must have created a different account back then and have no documentation. Do you know of a google forum where I could ask for help to find my api account using my domain? Thanks

Under Products you should be able to access Analytics.
Hear is another thought look up your site on Waybackmachine archive.org/web/web.php
then check out the source code.
Cheers
