Global Configuration window broken 1 year 4 weeks ago #44238

Greetings!
I'm working in a site that was Joomla 2.5.2 and is now 2.5.4. In either case, if the global config page does not display correctly. It displays with no CSS and no template modules. There is no way to SAVE, CLOSE, etc.

Before I go into all the details of the sequence of events, can you tell me if you have seen this before?

Hi Hope,

Since you just updated, did you try purging cache and then clearing cache?

Thanks. I just tried and no luck. I'm curious, have you seen this type of problem before? I'm attaching a screenshot of the Global Config window.

Hi
I have not seen this before. Did this happen before you upgraded? Try going to Extension Manager>> Database to see if there are any errors; click fix to sort them.
After that I would consider reinstalling the joomla core.

Mark

Definitely try Mark's suggestion. I've seen that fix issues after a Joomla upgrade. That would have been my next guess.

Hopefully that works. Let us know.

You know, I didn't go to the Global Config window before upgrading Joomla so I don't know how long the problem has lasted.

It appeared that the problem happened when I updated Phoca Gallery yesterday. The photo gallery broke at that point. I tried to install an earlier version of Phoca Gallery, but it didn't take. So I restored the site to the Joomla 2.5.1 version with the earlier Phoca Gallery. Then the Phoca Gallery worked but not the Global Config.

Sadly, Mark's suggestions didn't work. Errors were found in the database, and fixed but it made new difference. I tried everything I could think of, including:
  • installed Admin Tools pro and ran all their maintenance buttons
  • updated RSFirewall, ran a system check and database check/repair
  • repaired the database in the way described by Mark
  • repaired the database in the bluehost control panel
  • emptied temp files
You have no doubt done this many times, but please point me to the steps to reinstall the Joomla Core. I'm leaving town this week and will work on this this coming weekend.

thanks,
Hope

Note from my client:
Recently, when I search for an article title, it won't find it. Then I empty the search box and retrieve all articles, and scroll through and find it after all. That's the only problem I've been seeing.

Hi Hope,

You can use Admin Tools to reinstall the Joomla core. Here's the tutorial on how to do that (same thing applies for 2.5):
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-up...min-tools-extension/

Hopefully that will fix it for you!

Kind regards,
Nick

Thank you Nick.
Admin Tools says that I am using the latest version of Joomla, which I am: 2.5.4. Should I downgrade somehow and upgrade again?

Hi Hope,

There should be a Reinstall button on Admin Tools.

Hi Hope,

You're welcome, Hope! No, just go ahead and reinstall. It will replace all your core files.

By the way, make sure you've made a backup first (see tutorial above for more info).

Kind regards,
Nick

Great idea, Nick and Ed. I'm so glad to know that I can REINSTALL the existing Joomla version.

I tried it and I wish it worked!! I cleared the cache afterwards, quit Firefox and reopened it to make sure but the same problem is happening. I have the same results in Safari.

I did get notification of an update for JCE and for a system plugin called SecurityImages. JCE updated fine, but I got an error when I tried to update the SecurityImages plugin:
Error connecting to the server: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
Package download failed: download.waltercedric.com/rokdownloads/r...rityimages_6.0.2.zip

I'm attaching a screenshot of this error for the heck of it, in case you think it might be connected to this issue.

Hi Hope,

Looks like you're using the core upgrader. Could you give Admin Tools a try instead?

Oh, I should have said that I DID use Admin Tools. I just wanted you to know that the core updater is having a problem, and I didn't know if it was connected.

Hi Hope,

That's a really strange issue and the first time that I've seen it. Only part of the source code is displaying. My guess would be that either your have a template override that's modifying that area, or more likely, that a system plugin is at fault.

Try going through your non-core System plugins and disable them one by one, checking the global configuration each time. Hopefully that will help you track down what the issue is.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Thank you for looking under the hood.
Would you recommend that I troubleshoot this way:
  • open two browser windows side by side
  • open the global config window in one browser window
  • open the plugin manager in another
  • disable a non-core system plugin
  • refresh the global config window
Do you think I need to clear the cache every time, close and reboot the browser?

Hi Hope,

You're welcome!

Yes, that method should work well. No, there's no need to clear the cache or reboot.

Nick

Hi Nick,

I disabled each non-core system plugin, one by one, and the Global Config window hasn't changed.

I also chose Hathor as the default admin template, and that didn't help either.

I'm not sure what you mean about a template override -- for the admin template?

thanks,
Hope

Yes, for the admin template. Have you made any changes pertaining to the admin templates?

Hi
Just reading back through the tread. Two thoughts both "long shots" - have you tried disabling Phoca gallery as that is when your problems started and have you tried using one of the default templates, just to see what happens.

Mark

Check out the following discussion:
forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=624&t=690980

YES -- I followed this advice and it worked:
REMOVE this file.... libraries/joomla/database/database/php.ini

Two questions:
  • can you think of any downside to removing that file?
  • do you understand what went wrong and why the deletion worked? (I probably won't understand the answer even if you know it, so don't worry much about this question)

Thank you!

Woohoo! I'm glad that solved things for you! :)

1) An extension might be using it.
2) It's not a core file, so I'm guessing that an extension inserted it upon installing. The file and/or the files with it, for whatever reason were conflicting with the global configuration.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

I'm back on this topic because the same problem happened on the same site after I attempted to update Phoca Gallery again. It must be Phoca Gallery that is installing that php.ini file. When I deleted it, again, the global config window is back.

I have written the developer, Jan.

I wanted this info in the topic in case anyone needs it.

thanks,
Hope
