extensions to create a Joomla dev site 1 year 1 month ago #45093

I'm looking for something to help me make a dev site out of my new live Joomla site. I've seen Working Copy but it seems out of date. Anything new out there that might work? I had a WAMP server but it no longer works since I neglected it as i was developing my live site.

Hi webmasterjp,

You can always download and install WAMP again. You can also install XAMPP or one of the other packages available.

What exactly do you mean by a dev site? Making a working copy on your local computer?

I'm not sure if I answered your question or not?

Let me know.
Ed

Hi Ed,
I need a development site to test modules and components/extensions and the WAMP site works ok, but when the marketing manager or anyone else needs to look at my work before I make it live, I am unable to direct them to a link or url since the test site is on my local computer.
I've read articles on how to duplicate my site but they are still within the Joomla site and that makes me nervous in regards to databases and also when I backup my main site using Akeeba, I'm also backing up the test site which makes a very large file.
Thanks

Hi
This tutorial should help.
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/test-site-akeeba-backup/
Just create a new folder on your server - "testsite" for instance.

Mark

Mark,
Yes, I did see that tutorial and attempted to do that it, seemed that the only way i could get it to work was to actually have the test site folder within my live site folder and i was concerned about that. Maybe I need to get a dev site url, but I am still trying to troubleshoot the issue and I hope I can get something up soon.

Hi Webmasterjp,

You don't necessarily have to have your test site on a sub domain, you could have it on any server, or even on your local server.

You should be able to take your .jpa file and put it on your local server, and place the kickstart.php on your joomla test site, then extract the jpa package using kickstart to make a copy of your site there. :-)
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero
